Thread: 6.5 x 284 load ideas

Looking for other options to try in my 6.5 284.

Recently, we’ll sort of, got a finbear rebarrelled to 6.5 284 with a shieln select match 1 in 8 twist, and a stug stock.

Initial shooting with 2213 and 143 eldx has not produced what I hoped with most groups around an inch but mostly a bit more.
Have tried powder weights and seating depths. I did get a 15 mm 3 shot but it did not repeat.
Have Redding dies including a type s neck die, Norma brass and federal match primers.

So, looking to change powder at this stage and keep trying the eldx’s. Thinking either rl22 or n540 and anyone else tried hybrid 100v?

For the 140gr Id be looking at slower powders. I tried RL23 with the eldx but accuracy was at the top of the pressure range and was stamping the odd case. RL 26 is gaining a following as well but I havnt tried it. After sorting some internal donut issues with the lapua brass I settled on ADI 2225 with the 140 berger EH. A comfy load of 56.5gr pushing 2960fps from a 24" barrel. Very good accuracy, es and sd and no temp sensitivity issues.

What weight did you start at for the 2225?
How’s the case capacity with it? You seating out a long way?

The bearing surface is just clear of the neck shoulder junction with the berger with OAL 3.175 .The eldx seated a bit deeper at .010 off and the bearing surface was below the neck/shoulder
Plenty of room with the berger and 2225, I started at 56gr and went up to 58.5. ( not compressed at that)
56.5 gave 2900fps at first but as with a lot of new barrels it picked up a bit of pace after 100 or so rounds. It grouped well from the beginning. speeds from a Labradar and have proven reliable.

Not a very popular caliber aye? Anyone else?

N560 is your friend in 6.5-284

From memory, my load was Lapua brass, 58gr N560, cci200 primer, 140 amax at just over 3000fps, also a 8 twist shillen select match

Its not in any of the manuals Iv got. Seaching lead me to a few guys using 2225 with many years of experience with the cartridge. There was a common theme of finding a sweet spot around 2950fps with 56-58 gr which worked perfectly for me. Its an easy cartridge to push faster but for the sake of barrel and brass life I was wanting to stay under 3000fps from a 24" barrel. I also ran most of the likely powders through quick load including N560 but none seemed to offer anything more and with AR 2225 being readily available, well priced and good for temp stabiltity it was first cab off the rank.

Great caliber, made an error in selling all my reloading gear as I was going to turn it into something else... things change so still have it, load data still about but am going to try some different pills Nosler AB's in 130g, LRAB's 129g, BTH 120g, 140g, Swith Scirocco 130g, Sierra 130g HPBT, 140g SBT...

Have run only 129g LRAB and they have been very accurate out to 600m. using H4831 51 ish g nudging 3000fps

Interesting reading @sneeze, might give some that a go with some of the loads I'm considering, thanks for sharing the info...

I’ve had good results with 2209, 2217, 2213 and rl22.

Of those 2209 was most pressure sensitive at 51 gns plus
