140eldms work wonders especially if you don't drive them to fast.

143gr ELD-X’s are great out of my 6.5x55 using RL22 and Lapua Brass. Slow at 2,550 FPS but really accurate. My boys use it and between them have shot 24 deer with that load and all but 1 have been one shot kills. The one that wasn’t didn’t really need another shot as it was out on its feet. I think the farthest has been a tick over 390 yards and the closest has been only a few yards.

I forgot how far out the die needs to be to seat 140gn AMAXs (this was a unprimed, case - just trying to get it right, so it did its job I guess )

The brew for me is lapua brass trimmed to 54.75mm, CCI200 primer, 2209h 43.5gns, 140gn AMAX, OAL 81.1mm (a bit longer than the pic above ), doing 2600fps, and groups around 0.298moa if I do my part. In a tikka T3 with MDT chassis.
That sounds a bit slow. Is that a hot load in your rifle? I know people who get 2900 fps out of their x55. 140 grain vld. N560.

But his is really hot. He has to trim a lot after each firing

2900 with the 143/140 is pretty up there.
Love to know what they are using

The high velocity loads are often N560. Mine are. Norma cases. 2830fps, 21.5" barrel. It will stand .5 grn more but case life is short.
    Superbly accurate.

    IMR4831 is not far behind.

Yep same as mine but suppressed.
My load is 44.8 of the very bland 2209 fed match in norma brass with 80.5 oal.
On my third factory barrel with a couple of new ones still on the shelf.
If ya get the urge gilly give it a try and see if your pop gun likes it.
Theres a few of the lads round here running this load and going well.
Validated at 2720 so not scorching but gets in!

    But,back to my original question.
Are there any overpressure signs that are specific to the M96 that I can look out for?
Not as far as I am aware of.

Funny thing is in Scandinavia the M96 action is not considered "weak" its considered perfect for what it was built for.If you want a Rifle in a more powerful caliber, you buy one with a different action.
