There has been a bit of talk about using the .223 on deer on here lately.
Ive shot 5 deer with my Model 7 .223 recently using 69 grain Targex at 2.95K. Fallow and Reds out to 275 yards.
On Fallow they have been excellent. Dumping a lot of energy and penetration good enough, but not outstanding. Very big entry wounds and mushy trauma into the lungs but no exits through the far rib cage. Ranges 100 yard - 250.
On a larger Red stag at 275 hit too far forward in the shoulder penetration wasn't great and it required a finisher. I find the 69grn Sierra TMK better on Reds with better penetration.
Im currently fiddling with the 77grn TMK in a new Tikka 1:8.
Couple of pics.
