If you want to go subsonic then you need to try something like these
.338 Controlled Fracturing 240gr Subsonic Bullet – Lehigh Defense, LLC
Normal bullets won't work at subsonic velocities
Thanks for the reply Stug. Are they available in NZ and other options?
I was keen on building a 338 whisper or 338 spectre but the brass is harder to get and limited to only a few projectiles so built a 300 Blackout instead.
Try these guys for projectiles they maybe able to get some .338 Controlled Fracturing 240gr Subsonic Bullets in for you.

Why not look at a 338 Federal cases made by necking up .308, I had the loan of a Sako .338 Federal a couple of years ago to play with some 310 gr cast bullets
quite impressed with it, only used it at short range the accuracy was pretty good with subsonic loads worth a look.

If your shooting subsonic only have you considered using cast projectiles?
A quick google showed quite a few people have gone down this route with heavy cast projectiles.

Midway has some Sierra MatchKing 300gr HPBT projectiles which might also suit your needs.

Hi shooternz, I've already got the rifle and 338 whisper/338 BR case is 1/2" shorter than the Federal. Cheers
Hi Pete, thanks for the info. I have sent a couple of emails regarding postage etc. Cheers
@Fireflite
No worries.
let us know how you get on with this project.

So no replies to emails regarding postage of projectiles yet but a mate has donated some 300gr hybrids to try out. They are 12mm longer than the case in OA length. I'm converting 6mm BR Norma brass and have just received 6mm-.30, 7mm & 338 expanders, neck turner with carbide cutting pilot (to remove internal and external donuts) and a set of full length dies. Will post some photo's in a few days after I give them a try.
