6.5 Creedmoor, 6 Creed, 6.5 PRC, 300 PRC all had exisiting cartridges that performed basically the same, it's just Hornady made a few tweaks to the designs to make them as fit for purpose as possible rather than a design from the 70s that has some short comings.

What the Hornady cartridges bring is availability, be it factory rifles, ammo, brass in decent quanities and backing from the likes of other companies (like Lapua).
The 7SAUM is definitely becoming more popular around the world and you can get brass from a few places now, but the 260rem was still somewhat popular when the 6.5CM came out yet it managed to bring availability to a whole new level.

Agree all starts with marketing the 300 prc I liked for the Sammi long heavy’s nothing the others can’t do they just require a custom throat nosler clapped them self at the heels with their Sammi spec it’s superior with a custom reamer but it’s all $$$ compared to a factory
Offering . Marketing and better saami specs have seen these prc cartridges thrive . The 6.5 saum shots the prc but it might as well be a wild cat

The first blue forum started up with many a yarn and much hilarity in 1995

The first model 7 and SF1 sendero in 7saum arrived in NZ in 2002

Since then Forums the world over have declared the 7saum is gaining in popularity

Truth is, it was never unpopular, it just gets “discovered” by each new hunter

The rem brass we coveted was average compared to what we have on offer these days

Now that’s something I can get behind bridges a gap between the humble 7-08Rem and 7Rsaum . I’m sure the 7x57 and others alot in their also

My comments are all very biased to my point of view based upon what I like from a cartridge and what I look for
#1 I like my cartridges to fit my actions
#2 I like my short actions cartridges short and my long actions long pretty much a rehash on #1
#3 I enjoy a good power/efficiency balance but I’m not opposed to a barrel burning powder eating rip snorter now and then
#4 Optimal twist for chosen weight class
#5 I don’t mind having to change a barrel to achieve all of the above

So given all of the above I prefer the reasons for me

6.5 Saum over 6.5 PRC
7 Blaser mag over 7 PRC
And 300 PRC over the Nosler and Winchester mag

Their we have it one out of three ain’t bad

The difference is now its getting popular for target shooters.
It's very popular as an F class cartridge and getting popular as a mid range ELR cartridge in the states.

The 6.5 PRC is getting some ground in the ELR, PRS, NRL games in the US and it's not a huge stretch to see a SA 7mm magnum getting more popular in time.

There are far more hunters in the world than target shooters but the average hunter is lucky to shoot 100 rounds a year where as many competitive shooters will shoot that in a day.
Cartridges can hang around for years for hunters who can have 50 pieces of brass last them the life of their rifle but would never be practical for a competitive shooter.

Would be pretty good being able to buy packet ammo with a 180 doing close to 3k.
As much as I dislike reloading I don't think there would be any benefit switching from my well proven 7saum

I bought a Remington Sendero in 7mm SAUM in 2004 with ideas of using it on the Kaweka tops especially around Kiwi Saddle. The following year a Remington VSSF in .223 cuddled up next to it in the safe. The VSSF is almost identical to the Sendero, other than chambering, so the idea was to use it in 4P comps as a trainer rifle for the SAUM. The VSSF got used quite a bit but the SAUM not so much due to declining mobility and sloth. I have ample brass and projectiles for any possible future use so I really must get it out of the safe a bit more.

I go hot and cold with reloading I just do lots of 100 now and by the time iv used them iv got a hankering to load again . I only have one rifle and load about 40x.308 rounds a year for a friend of mine so my times of hours and hours at the bench are done . It will suit some people perfectly and I admit the prc range has being a game changer for those who want the performance but are not interested in reloading so that is a huge positive

Yes do dust it off for a range trip

i think its an awkward case size. Its a little long for a xm action. the saum is perfect for the xm. able to seat out far. The 7mm/6.5mm prc would go alright. Reloading is consistent as long as the variables are the same and your load is tuned. Not a stab in the dark. If i could but ammunition that was perfect lot to lot it would be tempting to get that ammo. The ocd reloading is satisfying's. But you guys are right is all marketing hype. Its great for factory chambering having correct twist rates ect but not life changing.

18 years ago Grandpamac it should have at least 360 rounds down surely. what were you running in your saum?

My saums on a short action with 168s it’s bang on

I might give it a hoon in my XM when the 6.5prc barrel is toast....or maybe something completely different.

I am rather loath to admit that the rifle has fired barely 50 rounds. The factory 150 grain Corekokt loads chronographed 3,080 fps and handloads with the same projectile and 68 grains of AR2217 (Hodgdons ADI max) produced 2,985 fps. This was with Winchester WLR primers. I have since switched to Federal 215GM primers but have not chronographed that load. Initially I tried AR2213SC powder but couldn't reach 2,900 fps at book max. I have read that AR2209 works well in the SAUM but have not tried it yet.I tried the Hornady Amax projectile briefly but at 74mm oa it is a single load only and shot left of the 150 grain. Much more needs to be done which I must get on to.
