What is the shortest I can go without compromising too much speed?
Currently running a 26" barrel with a can but she's pretty long for a hunting rig. Getting 3020 fps with 162 Amax's at the mo (72 grains of 2217). No pressure so could stoke up a bit.
What length and speeds are you fulas and fulesses getting?
My finnlight is 24" getting 3005 with the Amax mate
Dr Watson is getting 2850 with 162 amax and 2217 with a 21.5" barrel and a suppressor. Bank on just under 50fps per inch lost.

usually from the start of the barrel to the end of the barrel. i go from where it joins the chamber
Have a look for the vent hole on the side usually. Measure from there is what I got told. Dont have my Rem at work so hope it has one. I know Tikka plus Blaser do ..
Its around where the bolt end goes when closed
Put more powder in the case ball bag
Barrel length is measured from closed bolt face to muzzle. Any other starting point just confuses. Drop your cleaning rod down till it goes clunk, put a mark at the muzzle, measure. No good trying to do it with a bore snake if you don't have a rod. Best done without loaded round in chamber as this gives further confusion. :thumbsup:

Fastest way to get barrel length is. Bolt closed (empty ) and cleaning rod down muzzle end then tape the end as a guide then measure that.

Look you wanna cut it, so cut it, but don't put it over a chrono or you will find its now just a poo70 with more noise :P
Chopped my sako 7mmrem down to 23 inch, 2950 fps with 2225 and 162.

Went for a Ruger American Ranch in 300 Blackout as I wanted a shorter 16 inch barrel with good energy and useful pills out to 200. Already having a 223 I thought it would be similar kit powder etc and cartridge cases would be re-used from shooting that. In the end its not you almost need to treat it as its own set up and I have designated cases for this calibre.
It also has let me play with some cool subsonic rounds including the LeHigh projectiles and some cool 125 and 168gr Nosler rounds shot as supers for hunting....
Bottom line is for $800 - and the possibility of cutting down what is at optimum accuracy at distance 7RM to something that I have the nagging thought - I'll never again be 100% happy with, I'm very happy with buying the 300... I will re-barrel the 7RM sometime in the future to a heavier contour but it won't be getting shorter that's for sure...
More guns in the safe can't be a bad thing ... Can it???
Yeah ive got a chopped bush gun. Was just seeing what orhers reckon. I wouldnt go below 24" so therefore cant see any point hacking off 2" :D she will stay as is id say
I reckon some deer will lose an eye before I even close the bolt!! :D :P

How's the trigger? my experience with these is can be a bit heavy and creepy from the get go.... And you'll do well to invest in a good full bedding job too if you haven't already. That will really help your groups.

I've got a Lammington CDL in .223 and it is a absolute corker after those two things!!! although guys tell me its bust due to the bolt being on the wrong side.:D

Just put a new timney in yesterday. Has had some form of bedding work but have it noted to watch. Load dev went ok, .7" at 100 but if they aint touching I'm not happy :) The trigger may improve my groups. First round hit at 895 so she's put a smile on me dial so far ;) That the furtherest I've shot with my own rifle, the 270 is all but a distant memory :P

Nice work... I've dialled mine in now but being a Tikka its taken a few trips to the range and a lot of shooting other rifles in between as I can only shoot 3 shot groups with the barrel and suppressor set up as they heat up to much and it starts walking the POI to 11o'clock - regular as clockwork beyond 3 shots. Hence the comment about heavier contour barrel in the future.
I'm also gonna try federal primers instead of the Winchester magnum primers as I've had a few click - no report misfires of late, good indentation just no boom. Have also been using IMR7828 for powder and getting really good accuracy out of this between 62.9 and 63.1 grains - bugger all difference in the groups. But Reloaders was out of these federal magnum primers when I started so I was kinda waiting to get an issue before I changed out. fortunately my issue wasn't like rambo260's in the weekend. Still have 2 and a bit packets if anyone wants them...
