    7mm Remington Magnum Thar loads

    Hey all,
I've just got my new Howa 7mm RM with a 24 inch barrel, so that's what I'm sending them out of.
I want to load for Thar hunting, so nothing too light projectile wise and I won't be shooting past 600m - 700m max,
I was planning on going with 150gr Siarra Game Kings, as I've had good luck with GKs with my 243 and 308.
On forums I've read that Reloader 17 or 22 works well,

The load can't be to expensive because I tent to shoot a lot for practice so I don't want 100 powder and bullets that a dollar a piece.

Any suggestions/comments that might help guide me?
I'm interested to hear from people who load for thiers.
    Regards,
    William

Are the A-max rounds a hunting round? I was told they are a target projectile. They have a great BC. Do you usually go with the heavier projectiles?

Amax are a great medium-long range projectile for our nz game.

just be carefull using them up close.

None of the 2 I tried did

I read they blow up close and thought oh goodie this will be fun. 168's loaded max in the .300WSM never blew anything up. Think I just need a bigger gun

    What's a "Thar"?.

180 VLD's at 72gn 2217 plus or minus a little depending on your rifle. Wouldn't be using Game Kings at 7Mag velocities(inside 300), unless you are being cheap and loading them slow, which would negate the whole point of going 7Mag from .308.If you must go Sierra for the cost, go to Prohunters instead, much tougher, better if you change weight, staying with Sierra, go to the 160 HPBT, it is tough and kills really well, the 175 Game King has better bc and will flatten just about anything at 600

    Personally, I run 180 VLD's at 3000 fps(72.5 ADI2217) and/or 120 TTSX's at 3500 fps(70 ADI 2209).

Being cheap about loading for 7Mag is a mistake, the whole point is to wring performance from it, otherwise .280 would have been a much better bet. (As a budget performer, the .308 is nearly impossible to beat, so don't try!)
My .308 gets fed 130 TTSX's and 165 SST's and the SST kills them just as dead as the 7Mag at 600, despite being somewhat shy of the 7Mag's velocity and energy at that range.

+1, spat out of my wsm at 3000fps+ they have nailed everything. They certainly blow up inside the animal but havent even come close to having a surface blow up like people talk about

Ok so it seem everyone goes with much heavier rounds than I thought to be ideal.
257weatherby, How are you ringing so much speed out of yours with such a heavy round, are you running a 28" barrel or something?
I only wanted to go with the sierras because that is what I usually use, I have no objection with using more expensive rounds, just want to use something I can reliably get without to much trouble.

Every rifle is different, I actually have a 24" barrel on the 7Mag, yet across two different chronies under varied light conditions across a number of months it consistently gives me a 3000fps average, and confirms it at 600 in the field, no standard pressure signs, reckon I could get more but not gonna try cause it gives me sub moa without either muzzle brake or suppressor. Might be the lesser bearing surface on the VLD. Otherwise no idea, but anywhere from 2900 to 3050 is the normal range for most 7Mags running a 180, so it is not really hugely fast in comparison. Bizzarely, can't seem to make 160's go much faster than the 180's.

The Bergers will be a bit fussy finding the correct oal, the Seirras will be much more forgiving finding the right load

I've shot a few deer with amaxes. Most at distance. A fair few in closer. I liken them to an RPG in close. Messy but even more effective. Who needs front shoulders anyway
