Thread: 7mm sectioned projectiles

Following on from the 270 GK exploding thread and @Flyblown comments on Pro-hunters v Gamekings. I decided to section some of my projectiles. I was always under the impression that Pro-hunters had a thicker jacket than Game-kings but as can be seen below this is not the case. Except for the HP-GK which looks a tad thicker.
The Noslers BT are much thicker and felt harder while filing.



From the left 120gr Nosler BT, 150gr BT, 140 Sierra PH, 140gr GK-HP, 150gr GK.

Bloody good sections those.

Maybe go a wee bit further on the ProHunter so you're into the tip and can see the hollow point.

Funny how the Nosler BT has this reputation for being explosive, eh...

Does it? what cal and weight?

I'm using the 140gr Nosler BT's in my 7mm08 and they seem to be more inclined to explode than mushroom. Not had enough experience with them yet but so far "I'm monitoring with interest."

Brought me back to my apprenticeship days all those years ago.

120gr BT's hold together much better than 150gr,i have tried many different bullets in 7mm08 and still to find a better preforming one

As you can see from the solid base on the NBT's they are a decent bullet, even if they do expand alot in the front half the base will generally always hold together and carry on and penatrate through.

I use the 150BTs in my 7mmRM (MV 3160fps) and have never had any issue with a lack of penetration.

Surprised how solid those base and jacket of the BTs are. I have developed a really accurate load based on the 150gr 308 bullet, yet to shoot anything with them. But that pic gives a bit of confidence.

Any chance of other common bullets being sectioned? It would make a great resource for the forum. I'd donate a few if it wasn't for the lockdown....

Or maybe some instructions on how to do this...?

You need a good small vice with nice sharp Jaws, I used a No.1 record (3"). Make sure the Jaws have a nice shape top edge, I ground mine as they were pretty bugged (thanks Flyblown for the tip). Nip up in the vice and used a course double cut file to file down just above the vice Jaws, switch to a fine file and than to 80grit sandpaper on a block for final finish.
And get a file paddle or a wire brush and keep your file clean as it will clog with lead quite quickly.
A little bit of work but I had nothing else to do today. I only shoot 7mm and 6mm so don't have much more to section .

@Dama dama they definitely hold together a lot better than the SST's. I was looking forward to chasing a few big angry stags with them right about now.... oh well....

These were recovered from 2 different stags 1 at 270 and 1 at 229 yards although they have seperated they dropped them on the spot 120 grn Nosler B Tips 7mm 08
