Thread: 7mm sectioned projectiles

Yip I'm running the 165s in my little 308, smoked everything so far. Might give the old file job a go myself just for shits and giggles

@25 /08 IMP what kind of MV was that? loaded a few of them for a mates 18'' 7mm08. think they should do the trick by the looks of that.

@Hunty1 you have been pretty adamant about that which also adds to my confidence. I was hoping to give them a whirl right about now... Did you try the 165gr SSTs on something live?

Both rifles that we're shot in are 20" barrel doing 3000fps.

Exit of 165 grn NBT @ 3K and 75 yards. Hit a bit far back but only went a few yards. NBT are a wonderful bullet. I think the modern versions are better than when they were first introduced - beefed up a bit I think.

Agreed. I’ve never had a problem with them. But the rumour that they break up or “explode” persists... Especially in the UK.

At very close range (say 30m) but slower than yours (308) I have found the BT Hunting unlikely to exit on heavy reds but it’s not like that is a problem because the animals haven’t made much more then a couple of steps. The bits that I have found inside the carcass demonstrate significant fragmentation of the upper half of the bullet in a hail of small bits. Pulled a couple of bases out from under the offside hide.

I did some casual googling on this earlier and there is still some “grenade” type comments out there.

There’s a good chance some guys get confused between the Varmint variety and the Hunting variety. Two quite different bullets but both marketed under the Ballistic Tip brand.

From memory the early BTs were the old nosler solid base with a polymer tip added, called solid base because of the extra depth of copper at the base. Not sure what if anything has changed over the years but the 120BT in 7mm08 is an excellent option.

Top is .30Cal 200gn ELD-X, Middle is 175gn TLR and bottom is un-cut 175gn TLR

I agree. I used the 150gr NBT 30 cal in a 308 Browning BAR when they first came out, they were shite. Under a hundy the BAR was a splatter gun, surface blow ups with fragmented penetration. Certainly a lot better by all accounts these days.

Due a number of reasons/excuses I didn't get a chance. I figured taking it to Leith Valley range would be a bit painful so that limited my options a lot. I had it too long so sent it on to the next guy to the list. Will get it sorted some stage. From memory the Quickload figure was 2,775 from my 19" barrel, but that is all theory of course.

Good time for getting loads made up...

Again not a 7mm but it's big brother Mr 30cal.

The Nosler is a considerably more stout construction.
I thought I'd done a great job with just a bastard file until I took a photo. Maybe a bit more with a 2nd cut file will look better for another go.
