    7mm ss cs 7mm saum vs 7mmsst

Am toying the idea of a 16-18inch 7mm bush rifle capable of 500-600m shots also. Because I have dies, brass etc for a 7mm saum, I was going to build this as a 7mm saum, but I also like my wildcats, I saw the 7mm sherman short and the 7mm sherman short tactical . Anyone looked into these ?? Being that I'm building this on a short action ( already have defiance short action coming), what do you think would.be best? Hoping to throw 168s around 2700 fps. Also, I was looking at an 18inch proof carbon, but saw hardys offer a 16inch carbon.

What would you do? The 7mm sst looks to tickle my pickle.Name: Screenshot_20230623_222856_Chrome.jpg

Isn’t one like an ackley improved saum and the other one a 7mm-300 wsm? Not the most impressive wildcating out there…
Will you have enough space in the mag to shoot the longer bullets seated out?

Nah, I'll be running 168s, or possibly 150gr berger classics etc. I'll measure my mag length when I'm down next as that could help decide.

I looked at them many years ago and thought the same thing.
Thing is you can fit a 168 saum into a short action and get good performance so not sure if you would gain anything.
Barrel length would be a hard one. If you have already got one at 20 inches go 16. But if not 18 would be a my pick

I wouldnt bother bro pain in the ass Richard seems cronic at claiming extream gains that dont seem to pan out on the chrony .

Just buy a 708 if you want to use the magnum action a standard saum will be fine the joker a custom scope turrets was getting one going this week with 2209 and 162 eldm 16" barrel for 2800fps or something. A gigantic waste of time and money nothing a .308 wont do

If you must use the action the 300 saums alot better option for the short barrel

    I built a custom 284win from a 7mm08 Tikka. Very easy conversion.

Im getting 162s to 2780fps from a 18" barrel using 2209 with a load that is nice to brass. Makes nice little groups. 600m gun all day long.

You should be able to get the same performance from the SAUM with a 16" barrel but powder selection becomes more important.

So this AGAIN brings up the question... why a short action???? why not go with a long action and make life easy for yourself??? the weight gain/saving cant be bugger all....if its intended for longer shots, the quicker bolt throw isnt relevant and indeed if quick follow up is an issue ,wouldnt an easy to get to feed long action be better???
and if you going long action..the std chamberings are more than capable of doing it just as well with a lot let fuss or expense setting up and resale will be easier

Why a short action or why a short action chambering?

Mines on a short action and its brilliant I shoot 180gn eldm at 2900 longer barrel obviously its my do all bush to the mountains barrels 20" if i was running a 24" Id be happy with a 280AI or 284Win or even the 708 but I wanted to hold velocity and a handy to me oal length from bolt face to muzzle with a saum over the 280 i get an inch more rifling for the same length and an inch less action contributing to shorter out the front maintain correct legnth of pull. The short fat seems to hold velocity better than the long skinny sub 24"

I did a lot of back and forth of which cartridge to use for my project. I was also looking at wildcats based on the SAUM. My criteria was to be able to easily take shots at 600m and have the finished rifle with suppressor, scope and ammo at around 3 - 3.2kg. I have accurate weights for a bunch of modern actions and can estimate barrel weight via CAD. In the end the Tikka beats everything short of custom titanium actions plus the barrel shank is smaller than standard, so you gain extra weight savings there. You can also shave about 140g from a tikka action by milling the receiver, fluting the bolt and replacing the bolt handle, further improving on other actions.
My rifle is around 3.2kg as show above (without bipod) and it is pretty lively to shoot. Bad technique will see it shooting around 1 - 1.3moa. Proper shooting technique will shrink that to 0.4 - 0.5moa.

At the end of the day a 7mm08 tikka in a senator stock popped up on TradeMe for a good price and that sealed the deal on which cartridge, as 7mm08 is very easy to convert to 284. It may be a an inch or so longer than a short action with the same barrel length, but it balances perfectly on the magazine and is a pleasure to carry and shoot.

The way I look at it, is I'm getting 24" 7mm08 performance from an 18" barrel, can use a suppressor and still be shorter than a 24" barrel.

Theirs so much projectile in the case its actually funny il grab a picture when I get home

    @SixtyTen

My steel short action 20" truck axle flutted 2b steel barrel ready to go less ammo. 7rm/7bm/ 7prc perfomance in a short action . Its since changed scope to a vx5 and being cerokoted and had some baffles put back in the can id suspect its somewhere around 3.3-3.4kg now dream to carry but as you mention pretty lively has got better since changing from the 168 to 180 projectile more of a push than a snap.

That looks a nice set up hows that scope go? Iv a friend shopping at the moment and he doesnt like the leupys field of view Name: 20230525_164959.jpg

Id keep it somewhat simple with 7mm SAUM at 18" (or more). I wouldn't bother going shorter then that, there's just no need as 18" is plenty short enough. Even my 20" SAUM is a very short handy rifle once its combined with the short action just like Keltons above (but not quite as cool).
