I have a sako 20in 708.
Would like to try the 140 nbt and the 150eldx. Anyone had luck with rl16 or other powders?

Mucked about a fair bit with my tikka 7mm08 (same barrel as your sako)
The 150 ELD-X shot okay with RL17 (none- temp stabilized version of RL16 I believe) but brilliantly with 2208, velocity was slow though. In my rifle they needed to be seated out longer than SAMMI spec for accuracy however (COAL of 73mm from memory)
Currently running the 162 ELD-M at similar velocity and brilliant accuracy at COAL of 75mm.
Not sure how much mag length you have but maybe your limiting factor with a SA Sako?
Cheers I don’t think the sakos mag will limit it as they are much longer then a tikka mag.
Running 150 ELDx with RL16 2750fps out of 22in bbl. For 140gn pills I'd stick with 2208
Yip I would be using 2208 with 120 or 140 Nosler B Tips I load 45 and 47 I think

Anyone loading for a ruger 708 mates wanting to start loading his
I've loaded about 4 different Tikkas in 7mm08 now and 140gn BT/AB always super accurate with 2209 powder. My pet load was 50gn of 2209 but that is upper end, so start well below and work up.
Cheers guys I have some 2206h and rl16 also rl26 but no 2209 and looks hard to get atm so will try them for now I think.
I've got the 120 Nbt going at 3100 using 2206H in a T3 and plan on trying the Seirra 100gn Hp for hoppers and Fallow and the 140/150 Berger for Yeti, all with 2206H. Got tons of 2209 and will not be using it for the 7mm08, use the powder you are most likely be able to get as the supply dries up.
@Nathan F don't you have a shit hot load for your Sako?
Yes 43.5 gns of 2208 with fed primers and 140 gn ballistic tips. Work up to it obviously but it’s a hot accurate load.
Is that the new model S20 takedown ?
I've got a model 85 in 7mm08 and use 140 NBT with AR2208 and would recommend those bullets - they kill very well. 2208 is usually easy to obtain. There is Norma factory ammo you can buy (at times) which will give you an idea of terminal performance. My handloads shoot a bit tighter but not hugely different. I've had 10 reloads with the Norma brass and only now annealed them. Never had one wear out - just lost plenty on the ground. Set your die so you only size them back .003" or thereabouts. I just full length size every time.
I found my overall length was limited by how long a loaded round I could eject. The lands are a long way away (so a round nose bullet loaded to 2.800" won't touch them I guess) but it still shoots OK. The mag would hold a bit longer too but not for hunting.
42-43grains 2208. 140 bt. Mag length.
2206h is good for 7mm08 getting good speed & accuracy out of 43.7gn under a 120 NBT.
Not sure if NBT are really worth the money though, any old bullet seems to knock them over.
I load for two different rifles both using 162ELD-x, one likes 2208, the other 2209. Both just above book max loaded to mag length with velocity about 2700-2750
Goes good.....
