My uncle was a Tahr culler in the 1960's. The best rifle calibre he used was a 7x57, very similar to the 7mm08 and the best ammo was Dominion from CIL in Canada. The 139 'Western' open point expanding ( Old name for Hollow Point) was rated at 2800 to 2900 fps depending on rifles. Anyway, uncle said that nothing they could load themselves could get close to the trajectory or game flattening ability of those factory loads. The western OPE had a hollow point and a cannelure on the ogive as well as well as a boat tail. They made these from the 1920's.
After much trialing of reloads the conclusion was reached that the 140 grain bullets were the best and any heavier did not produce the same Hydrostatic kills. My uncle said that he loaded 47.5 gr of 4895 in the mid 1960's.
My point being that maybe the 140 gr bullets at 2900 are the best choice in 7mm08 ? This is based on the deaths of 6000 Tahr
