    7mm08 and Reloader 17 help...

ok so my next one is, I thought I would try reloader 17 with a 160 TMK or 162 ELDM. Has anyone had any success with those combinations?

    Ta!

I havnt tried either of those projectiles but am using Re 17 with 140 accubonds ,goes good in 708
    Tried 160s without much success.
The 160s go good in my SAUM but not with Re 17

If you haven't already got powder, go with Re 16. It's less temp sensitive and still give similar speeds. I haven't tried it myself but will be switching once I run out of Re 17.
    Sierra's accuracy load for 160 TMK is 45.5 Gr Re 16 for 2700fps from a 24" barrel.

Or again if you haven't bought the powder yet, you could use boring old 2208.

Goes really good in my Tikka t3 7mm08.

    40.5 grains pushes162 ELD-M at 2600fps from a 19inch barrel comfortably and it's very good consistency wise.

That is the exact load I use for 162eldms in my 7mm08 SAUR100. I thought I'd try RL17 with the 162gr eldm to speed it up a bit.

That was kind of the point of my post, it may have came across wrong. What I have found is you will gain about 50fps maybe a little more. But if you work your load in winter you may strike pressure problems in summer, if you work up in summer (which is safer) you could loose half of what you have gained in winter.
RL17 has the same temp as Win760 about 3fps/degrees C
And it's burn rate is around the same as 2209, so in short barrel the gains aren't really there.
But other people may have had better results in the 7mm08

I'm always keen for a bit of experimentation ha ha, I think I'm onto my 8th powder/bullet combo in my rem mag. Variety is the spice of life and if you want another 50fps, then why shouldn't you have it? Who knows it may go even better in the longer barrel?

This is by far my favorite part of the forum, it's like I get to reload vicariously through others

My uncle was a Tahr culler in the 1960's. The best rifle calibre he used was a 7x57, very similar to the 7mm08 and the best ammo was Dominion from CIL in Canada. The 139 'Western' open point expanding ( Old name for Hollow Point) was rated at 2800 to 2900 fps depending on rifles. Anyway, uncle said that nothing they could load themselves could get close to the trajectory or game flattening ability of those factory loads. The western OPE had a hollow point and a cannelure on the ogive as well as well as a boat tail. They made these from the 1920's.
After much trialing of reloads the conclusion was reached that the 140 grain bullets were the best and any heavier did not produce the same Hydrostatic kills. My uncle said that he loaded 47.5 gr of 4895 in the mid 1960's.
My point being that maybe the 140 gr bullets at 2900 are the best choice in 7mm08 ? This is based on the deaths of 6000 Tahr

Here is some interesting reading you may have already by Nathan Foster. It challenges some old thoughts with 7mm08...

(The link for the whole article...

"Heavier 154-162 grain 7mm bullets often produce the most consistent results in the 7mm08 across a wide range of game body weights and ranges. The only downside of this approach is that at a theoretical level, the lower velocity of a 154-162 grain bullet seems to go against everything hunters have striven towards for the last 100 years - high velocity as a means to produce fast killing.*

Each cartridge has its own performance parameters and using a slower, yet higher BC bullet in the 7mm08 does not in any way remove killing power or limit trajectory within this cartridge’s existing limitations. Thisis not the same theory as the slow moving heavy bullet practice relative to big bore performance or 20th*century ballistics theory. Rather, it is simply a method of utilizing current bullet designs, particularly the sleek, soft 162 grain A-max. The A-Max allows the hunter more error with shot placement at extended ranges as rear lung wounds are usually so severe that game cannot move far once hit. At the same time, velocity from the 7mm08 is so mild as to not cause shallow penetration with point blank range raking shots."

@Rated M for Magnum what OAL do you use for the 162-ELD-M

Yip agree with that I have much better results with 150's /154's than 140's. I haven't shot any game with 162's yet just paper.
    I'm currently using RL-17 with 150 ELD-X but didn't find a great improvement speed wise over 2208

The 162gr ELD-M has given great results for me in 7mm-08. I've shot a few dozen deer since switching to the 162gr and no animal has got further than 30m, ranges from 10m - 300m. Quite a few bang flops.

Hi @winaa, 2.835" coal that just fits in the Tikka mag with no modifications

Bit more of a temp swing through seasons down south and have you chronod the load at different temps? Of course you won't have issues if the loads developed in summer but the speed may drop off enough to cause issues at range.
