Hey there, new to posting so go easy 😆
Just in the process of building a 7mm prc.
I’ve been looking into load data on a few of the gun powder websites. Has anyone had real world experience that they would like to share? I’ve currently got a few boxes of 175ELDx and 180ELDm
Powders: Retumbo/2225, 2217, 7828ssc,4955,RL25

2225 and 2217 will be your friend . What length barrel are you going for . 2225 went fantastic in my 7 blaser mag which would be very similar in compacity

RL26 gives the best speed, not by a huge amount though, 2225 wasnt far behind, 2217 was the slowest.
Hornady book max is most certainly book max, theres no sneaking it a little over like you can a lot of other cartridges where the data appears "conservative". Load up something at the hornady book max and you will certainly completely flatten the primer & wreck the brass.
Hornady brass is a bit inconsistent, some of it appears to be softer than the rest. At below book max load (even sometimes just shooting the factory ammo) you will get the odd bit of brass that stamps / hard bolt lift / ends up with a loose primer pocket. Out of 60 cases i have about 45 good cases now after a few reloads and throwing out what appear to be the soft ones.

What speeds were you getting from factory? And what speed did you find the node with 2225?

I never chronied it it was far more accurate though wouldnt even be 50fps in it id say make bugger all difference in drop or energy I shoot 180eldm in my saum now at 2880 and the differnce between that and my other rifle at 3110 is not as much as youd thinkQuote:

Hornady brass fed215 67gr rl26 3.338 coal is 2990 in my rifle.

The accuracy was pretty good but a fair bit slower than I would have liked. Book max was 64 gr and I was finding pressure signs at about 62.5gr-63gr and only hit 2830 fps max out of a 20” barrel.
I was hopin for a little more room to move with that one but have just got a lb of retumbo (2225) to try out. Will see if I can get a little less pressure with a little more speed.
I have a box of adg brass sitting there but I kind of want to make all my mistakes and tinker on the hornady brass because I start on the adg. Is that a dumb idea? Should I just start with the retumbo In The adg brass Attachment 249616
Start with the Adg mate do a ladder 66-69gns would be my guess but you should be able to find some real data on the combo the Adg will behave different to the Hornady so better to start with the Adg I’d expect 2850-2950 mate was shooting 2217 22” 2930fps
second that, the results were night and day between Hornady and ADG you might. 100% start with ADG. I had better results with LR primer with H4831sc,

Interesting about the LR primers with H4831sc. Did it help in giving more speed with the same charge weight or just less pressure signs so could increase your charge weight more?
And kelton , would you ladder test in half grain increments to start with from 66-69gr ? And then do a .3gr ladder once you’ve found when the pressure starts? Or just do one really big ladder test in .3gr increments all the way from 66-69?
LRP helped getting better es and sd. As for brass, Hornady brass was really inconsistent, I was getting loose primer pocket after one firing with some, others all good, it made it really hard reading pressure sign.
Just do .5s mate you won’t run into any major issues if you get above pressure it’ll only be a small difference my rule of thumb is large rifle up to 70gns and magnum over 70 gnsQuote:

Ladder test with the retumbo went great . Some good speeds (2942 was the fastest )and hit pressure signs bang on 69gr(justejector mark, primer was still ok looking and not stiff bolt.. Few possible nodes to explore there . Way way happier with this powder .
The ADG brass was a great call. Very consistent between all the loads and results.
Kenton (and anyone else) if I found a load that was good but wanted to try the large rifle primers instead of the magnum primers to see if I could reduce the standard deviation . Would I need to alter the powder charge at all being a smaller primer ? Or is it safe to just switch between the two on a load . Attachment 249916
Safe to switch mate, the other way you need to be a bit carefull if you close to max
Safe to switch down looks like some good nodes their I found 180 eldm super accurate around 2850-2950
Also white river primers seem to fall between 210 and 215 cheap and available if availability is on the mind
Years ago I used a load of 68gr of 4831sc powder lighted up by a federal large primer behind a 178gr amax in my 300win mag long range gun. Exceptionally accurate. But the only issue , was during very cold weather temperatures, I would have delayed ignition. It was like shooting an old flintlock gun.

I’m watching this thread with interest as I looked at rebarreling a rifle last year to a 7mm PRC but the cost is getting up there these days so I figured I’d just wait until Tikka start making them as their generally two years late to the party but I guess there’s a process with implementing US pressures to European pressures.
Anyway, I figured I’d wait until they start churning them out as I’m in no rush.
It seems that people are either running 175 or 180 gr projectiles but has anyone toyed with running any of the 162 gr projectiles or even going as low as 150 gr?
Gun city has a tikka with a 26” fierce carbon barrel. Plus a heap of fierce rifles. I see Bertram now has 7prc brass as well.
