Thread: 7x64 loads

Start with the 280 loads and work from there, as mentioned they are virtually identical.
I've used both 2209 and 2217 in mine (currently shooting 140 SSTs out of my Steyr)

As others have stated 280 loads are fine as starting point. I have tried various powders/loads from 2209, 2213sc, RL19 and 2215 on 140 gn AB's, 150 gn partitions & 154 SST's.
2217 gave me best results & accuracy but I'm still chasing more fps for my 30 yr old HEYM. Love the calibre

Thanks guys, I have a Steyr, with a barrel a shade under 24". Sounds like 2217 might be worth a look...
Will likely play with 140s at some point, although results with factory 162s look promising for now.

Also currently needs a new scope. That might be an even harder question!

No this isn't a hack but I'm back in hospital (bored) and thought I'd revive said thread.
Any updates on powder choices @7x64 and have you tried the 162 amax?

Yes to both. It's shooting well with 2217, but a bit on the slow side. Good mild-ish load so certainly more than usable. Basically can't get enough in the case, it's about as compressed as I am comfortable with. I will try 4831 as I have a stack of it...

My CZ 7x64 (recently re-acquired from Norwest) likes 162 Amax's with AR2209, I took it up to 2900 fps but it was "happy" with exceptional groups at 53.8 (of the AR2209) which gave a 2824 fps avg. Norwest got it grouping like a benchrest rifle (like in the 0.1s/0.2s) with Sierra 150's and Win 760 (he's never told me how much, I'll pull one and see).

My 7x64 is now my "heavy thumper" and since it shoots so well its got the best scope I have on it (Leupold VX 5HD).

How long's your barrel and how are the cases holding up? That's about what Hornady claim for their factory ammo, but I'm slightly sceptical as with what's written on most boxes...

Thanks mate. That imo is good speed indeed and depending on barrel length may help influence my next caliber barrel choice. This comes in a 24" tube although I can shorten somewhat.
As asked above, cases going ok, and have any of you guys used factory ammo?

My barrel is 24". I did a wee comparison on Quickload for Norwest that's relevant here . . . with the 7mm Saum at Rem 7 mag length and using 150gn projectiles you have 64.2 grains H2O USABLE capacity, compared with the 284 at 55.2 and the 7x64 at 60.3 (at its normal mag length)

So it puts it in perspective a bit with a couple of the "fashionable" 7mm's

The rifle Tentman has is an exceptional shooter, has good DNA it shot everything well. 54 grains of W760 with the 150 grain Sierra gameking was really good.
