    9.3x62 loading

I have a good load for my Husky 1600 in 9.3x62, with 285 grain PPU round noses doing 2380 fps, which will do anything I need a 9.3 Mauser for, I reckon.

But, it depends on the availablility of AR2209 which is off and on nowadays, (mostly off)

I rediscovered my notes from a previous Husqvarna 9.3x62 I had a couple of years ago, where I loaded up some PPU RN 285's with 48 grains of AR2207 (same as H4198). AR2207 always seems to be available, in the shops. It shot very well, lighter recoil and got me 2200 fps, which is still quite good - its what the cartridge did in 1905 anyway.

So I made some more and tried them in my current 9.3 Mauser, and they shot just as well, for a slower velocity - 2020 fps. Well, slower is not the end of the world, its what a 9.3x57 does with teh same bullet, so I dont mind. I could put some more powder in and get it up to 2200 fps again anyway...

So all fine then. But, for the life of me, I can't recall how I came up with that load of 48 grains of 2207 / H4198 behind a 286 g bullet in a 9.3x62 Mauser. I have no idea where it came from. I can't find anything close on the net (mostly just low speed cast lead loads that use H4198) and I wonder if I extrapolated it from the 9.3x74? Or started with a 9.3x57 load and adapted it from there? I cant find it in old load books...buggered if I know what inspired me to try it.

I mean I can think up stuff for myself, but I wouldn't just try a random powder in a cartridge will nothing to base it on. I mean, I have used 2207 / H4198 in big bores before, like the 45-70 etc. I just cant find anything about using it in the 9.3x62. I dont beleive it will have much pressure behind it, the recoil is low too, I am fairly sure there is nothing to worry about.

Does this ring any bells for anyone? H4198 in a 9.3x62?

I use 56.5gr 2208 with the PRVI PARTISAN 286gr RN for about 2250 fps. This regulates with the open sights on my Mauser.

It actually looks better in real life

Stug - I have read all your posts on your 9.3x62, here and on other forums...

Owned a 9.3x62 for a few years, powders I had were 2209, 2208 and 2207. I never used 2207 nor did I see data for it.

    9.3x62 loading

Got a couple of 9.3. Very easy to load for.
    2208 is your huckleberry.
    58 gns behind a 286 woody.
    60 gns behind a 250.

These will both shoot very well.
    Job done.

RL15 is substitutable, start 2 gns lower and work up.

I have good loads already with the obvious powders like 2209 and 2208 -I wanted to know if anyone has used H4198 / AR2207 in this cartridge?

    Greetings,
I remember a number of articles in Handloader on the 9.3x62 30 plus years back so had a look on Load data dot com but nothing for H4198/ AR2207. IMR3031 was about the closest. Will have a hunt in the archives

    JD,
Lots of use in the .358 win case. So likely you saw it for a 9.3/9,5 x 57?

No recommendations for use in the bigger whelen or x 62 cases.

2206h goes well in the x62.

Use the 4198/2207 in a case where it’s optimal or swap/sell it.

Noones used it as it's not listed or very suitable. If you read the old 9.3x62 thread, not one mention of that powder, that says alot.

It’s burn rate is too fast to be optimal.
    Now go prove us wrong.

    Greetings again,
I had a look on Loaddata, com and in the back issues of Handloader and found plenty of data but none whatsoever for AR2207/H4198. There was quite a bit for IMR3031 though.
    GPM.
PS. Many of the powders listed required compression at their top loads including IMR3031. Certainly AR2207 will not be optimum and will require lower velocity to keep pressure down but Speer used to list reduced loads of IMR4198 for many of their cartridges including the .350 Rem Mag so for a soft load approximating the original 1905 loads it should be a good fit. The problem is the lack of load data. The late and great Ken Waters often listed soft reduced loads in his Pet Loads series but regrettably not for the 9.3 x 62.

The nearest I can find to that load is in the 444 marlin case with 38400cup pressure shown. Loads for 458w 45/70 8mm Mauser 358win all shown using 2207 but the triple four is closest to what you have done.
