Absolute Hammers in 222. Rem

I put sone 123gr ahs in a mates 6.5 PRC some time back when 6.5mm were unattainable, the results have been excellent so Though Id try them in my .222. Its 9 twist so the 51gr seemed a simple choice. A small case and limited magazine length made powder choice limiting and in the end I stayed with my standard for 222 rem. , 2219. With a drop tube and compressed load I ended up at 3350fps from a 20 inch barrel. 5 firings on the same case so far with no signs of over pressure, tight primer pockets etc.

First deer was a small hind at 220 yds

Bullet entered just backward of the crease punching a rib,

Exit was through the offside shoulder smashing bone. Appeared to be 2 exit wounds. No bullet or petals recovered.

Ran about 15 yds.


Second was the yearling .... Ok fawn.:angry: Again the bullet entered behind the crease but between the ribs and exited the same missing any bone at all, internal damage was significant. deer ran about the same 15-20 yds.

Great. Do you have any trouble with that gun ejecting? I had one and in the end the agent took it back. Just flopped the cases back onto the mag plate. Other wise it was fantastic.

Ive tried both the 52 grn and 60 grn H Hunters in .223. Much as in your pic.

Great results. I'm keen to give them a try in my 6x45.
I'd be keen to jump on board with anyone putting together an order in the near future.

No this one functions perfectly. It feeds smoothly to the point I was initially checking to see if had actually picked up a round and slings the spent cases some distance.

Nice. I bought mine new. Ejection trouble from the first shot. Broke my heart.
You need to take care when inserting the bolt not to bur the back of the alloy receiver.
It was the nicest rifle I have owned. I persisted with it for 6 months or so before it went back.

I can see how that would be gutting. Theres one in 223 in gun city Richmond if you wanted to revisit history.

Ok, so for the truly ignorant, please tell us what the make & model of the beautiful rifle is?

styr ultralight...if you use ctrl bottom left of key pad and + up on top right at same time you can zoom in/enlarge everything ..great when cant find glasses

If you zoom a little more you will see the "E" in Steyr :)

I put some 55gr TSX in a mates Vixen. Very tight grouping but he did not like them even though they killed well. Recently ran up some 55gr Game King in another Vixen. Was doing the front lawns and he went past tooting his horn with lotsa deer sticking out of his well side. Got a big thank you text later that day.

Weve tried quite a few 224 bullets on our wallaby trips. Iv settled on the sierra 55 HPbt now. Its affordable for high volume, devastating on small game but can still handle the odd deer. It also doesn't exit on the pigs I head shoot which is a little better when there is a few milling around. . The Nosler 55 BT would be best all round but its just a little more spendy and it will blow chunks out of small pig. The 51gr Hammer AH has the advantage of around 300fps and I like the construction with the deep cavity and long petals.
