Amaxes, I think im over it

Its long long story from starting out with a 308 to reloading to where I am now so Il spare you the pain

    Amaxes
    168gr in 308win launched at a leisurely 2750fps

Undoubtedly a great long range pill (sorry sneeze) but dam do they make a mess!
So far any Red + 200 yards they have performed well (mess aside) sub 200 Iv two epic fails.

This one was shot at 305y at a calc IMPACT velocity of2180fps....... behind both shoulders MISSED ALL SHOULDER MEAT
and collected a rib on both sides.

This is after id trimmed most of the blood so it can hang without going off!

Annihilated both lungs an took out the top of the heart.
Did it do its job? oh yea most defiantly its dead but the same shot with a barnes would be just as dead and a 2 inch diameter bruise around the hole.

This is a barnes at 325y calc impact velocity 2180fps ,yea I know its a neck shot and not directly comparable but cos im a useless pric I dont have photos of lung shot with barnes but they are similar.

So to summerise I originally thought a 168 grain going that slow would be fine for all practical ranges except bush.
So I had the barnes for close and the amax for dialing.
I think im going to dial the barnes and leave the amax for steel and ranges past the barnes effective range.

To those of you who wonder whats wrong with the first pics I have a chiller and like to hang my animals, blood between the muscle groups makes them go off and is just messy when butchering.

Your problems not with the amax its the fact that it .024 to large Seriously though dont apoligise to me, Im a big fan of barnes and I use them to 300yds in 6 and 7mm. Im on record not being happy with amax inside that range. Havnt seen any as messy as that horror movie though. Is it a trend or one off?

I think possibly the 30 cal 168 maybe more frangible than usual for a amax. From what iv seen of other cals driven faster they are not this bad......?

I have seen worse, it can be more depressing when they are presented to the factory like that. Not just front end damage but every visable bit of exposed meat. Shooter having a bad day mixed with OO can be embarrassing when your name is on the docket.

Id whack that thing off behind the ribs and chuck it to the dogs.

Have you ever had a clean shot deer end up with more holes in it by the time gets back to the factory ?

The actual meat of the shoulders is fine. Its just that you have to trim out all that blood when butchering. Depressing when you have deliberately taken a "meat saving shot".

I would give that front end away to those old mates that only ring up when they want some meat.

Yea thats what they look like when ya hit the shoulder, mine had hung for two days before skinning so congealed and easier to trim/scrape most of it off.
