Yup. Being prepping for it for years. Got laughed at a lot but always thought such a good thing as cheap Shotgun ammo would eventually end. Also, the loads I like to shoot weren't all that cheap anyway.
Still not yet worth it for trap ammo but definitely worth considering if you shoot something other than a 12ga and anything non toxic wise. You just have to be prepared to import the wads and stuff yourself
The cost of shot makes it marginal even for hunting loads with 12g. A friend has an old lee shot maker that does a reasonable job and it's perfectly fine to reuse fired wads if you can recover them. I make solids, some trap, field and "novelty"rounds this way
For sub gauges it is cost effective especially 410 though.
cheers for the perspective guys I had noticed the rounds I purchased for rabbiting had doubled in price, I purchased a tidy mec sizemaster for $60 and the previous owner threw in two bread crates full of hulls and multiple bags of wads, 100 kgs of various sizes of lead shot, 1600 primers, a few pounds of powder vectan and winchester and two more mec juniors and a pacific reloader so I have the gear and not much cost to get started, Im thinking i wont need the other smaller reloaders. or the 7 and 9 shot .
Well I have a buggered pacific reloaded I was going to put on here for a bitzer. Got it from the gun club when we got kicked out.
It was getting biffed.
Probably easier for someone in chch though
Smiffy i have the extra reloaders listed on farcebook market place at the moment but if they dont sell you are welcome to the pacific if you want a working one? so far I have only had enquiries about people wanting to get rid of the ones they have. and yes muzza im sure they do make a mess of bunnies at close range, but i just thought they might be better used by some one shooting trap although, i do think i may keep the 7s for a quail load.
Cheers for that but I have a couple of Lee loaders. The one with the single horizontal bar. One with bushings and one without.
Don't even use them
all good smiffy
May not be financially worth it now. But in a few years it can change.
IMO, if you see a bargin grab it.
I roll crimp 12g. It was cheaper a few years ago to buy a dedicated roll crimper from Russia than a locally produced bit that required a power drill to operate. While they might not be pretty, a home made one from a cheap old socket works also. Thats what you're up against making something with a retail price point up around the $60 or more. There will still be a market for them but maybe not so many as you would like. That being said, you can reload about anything going the roll crimp way. Then the only thing you really would want a press for is resizing the base..but it's not hard to make a ring resizer either. All this assumes low volume. If you want to load volume then a press makes most sense. For me I'd be interested in your potential offering if you do for 410 bore and 20 gauge.
if you use a break open gun you can get away with all sorts of things a magazine fed one wont tolerate/feed . I have the bits to reload both 12ga and .410 but other than something a bit different.... its cheaper and easier to buy factory.
you wouldnt bother with steel in .410 as ca nstill use lead...but buckshot however is hard to buy and really rather good in the wee gun. mixed shot sizes works best for me in the wee case, the more varied the better.
I’ve always loaded 12 gauge, what is time worth? Shot is biggest expense now
Im seriously looking at it if the right powders become available, but its only because i have an antique shotgun that I need to keep the chamber pressure low.
I have powders, but shot shells use a ton of it. I can load 4-5 45ACP from one 12g shell. And a couple of 30 cal rifle loads with cast bullets.
You can still buy Classic Lee loaders. That's how I started.
Have various presses in different gauges.Load bismuth 12 gauge for ducks with devastating results. Trap ammo is now around 140 a slab so if you have the components and time its well worth it. But paying retail for components would make it a costly exercise. Im going to set up my 410 press tomorrow to do some loads for the up coming duck season. We have 2 junior shooters . So it is cost effective for there application.
@GDMP. Are you going to stock any more mag tech brass shot shells? Keen on some. .410
Looking at loading some 410 bismuth .but looking for shot smaller than 6s .it's pretty pricey
Ive got several Mec presses, had to learn to load, was living in the Arctic, and shooting 16 ga,
I buy up bits and pieces as i come across them, doesn’t make sense for 12 and 20 normally, but the last couple year’s you couldn’t get 20 ga any place in Canada for 18 months, so got a kit and swaped out the 28 ga press to 20ga, ended up loading about 500 rounds more for work mates as well.
If you shoot sub gauge you should buy a roll crimper and a bag of wads, so you can make up a few shells if you get stuck,
just wondered if there are any Pacific shot loaders around for sale or parts thanks
