Ballistics of various calibres and coefficients

I put this chart together the other night using max load fps from an ADI manual, then input them all into the BallisticAE program.

I used accubonds and sst's for the projectiles as I have found they perform really well on the animals I have shot.
While better speeds could be easily obtained from some of these calibres, I reckon it shows that between the bullet diameters there is very little advantage within normal hunting ranges for a superior coefficient pill to give a real advantage.
What do other members reckon?

But I guess your hinting at windage, which is very relevant at longer ranges and probably why you love the 308 so much:D

Nah like to get something that "doesn't drop" at "hunting ranges" it has to be pretty absurdly large so you're always going to have drop otherwise and the differences in drop between standard cartridges aren't real world practically different so it's pretty much irrelevant

Yup, caliber and projectile selection is much less of an issue than some of the epic internet debates make you believe.

Litz says it plainly : range finders make "flat" calibres irrelevant. If you plan on dialing you pretty much have to range (humans tend to suck estimating).

The moment of enlightenment...

Do a chart for windage as others have suggested, say 4m/s or similar...

Also, if you're not dialing at 700 yards (max distance on chart) you will miss no matter what cal you use...

It's relevant, you've just gone out of your way to select bullets with very similar ballistics coefficients rather than actual good bullets that someone looking for long range performance would use, so, whatever

My argument is relevant when people that I know are running around with all the latest wildcats 6.5 this that or the other thing. "6.5 will hands down beat 30 cal blah blah blah when it comes to coeffients blah blah blah. Your misreading my point. Which is- Dia. of your pill is largely irrelevant between 6.5, .277,7mm,.308 for coefficient. If you already knew this then why bother chiming in trying to derail the conversation with your smart alec attitude?

It's not irrelevant, because to get a "good" BC in the .6 range with a .30 cal for example you're looking at a 210gr bullet, which has a LOT of recoil, and you need a case on the order of .300 win mag size to push it as fast as a .260 can push a .6BC bullet, for the same external ballistics.

There's something seriously wrong with your calcs there fulla. When I run a 30 cal 155 VLD @ 3050 in a 6mph wind Balistic gives a drop of 28 moa (so 112 of your 1/4 clicks ) and 5.3 moa Windage. ( 21 1/4 clicks). ??

Just leave him to play with his ballistic app. If he did any sort of shooting at distance with the projectiles and velocities he's using in his examples he would realise really quickly how silly he's sounding.

And what does you're 140gr 6.5 come out at? -post it up. I'm happy to be proven wrong.

I think what is actually important with the bc of a bullet is the windage, drop is the easy part.

Wind is often misjudged, and therefore a higher BC bullet is more forgiving when you Getty the wine wrong. Just about every thing else can be measured easily.

At the same velocity and conditions the 6.5 140 shows 22.3 moa drop and 3.4 moa Windage. So at 1000 Yds it has 20 inches less drift and has more energy.

So in ballisticAE, there are 8 different drag models, correct? A g7 model is for SPBT's going on what ballistic implies. However if what you guys are saying is true then when you run a bullet through the g7 model is this still wrong because of the listed coefficient is for a g1 model?

Not sure I understand your question but yes.
You can't change the drag model after you've selected the bullet. If you want to use g7 then either input the bc value manually or select the bullet from litz s list.
