Barnes 120gr TTSX in 6.5mm Creedmoor

    Hey guys,

Just wondering if anybody has had a chance to shoot Thar with these in 6.5mm Creedmoor and what your experience with them is. I am assuming no further than 350m for these bullets to reliably expand.

    Cheers.

Wouldn't you go 100gr to get the speed?

at 350mtrs you will be FAR better off with a cup n core...barnes work their magic up close n personal at fastest speed you can get...where they are good they are great...out further with lower resulting velocity ISNT one of those places.

As above, id prolly go for 140gr something or other. I use 120gr speer gold dot in a 260. Great near and medium.but if I had a dially scope on the rifle id prolly stick to 140gr though:

140eldm and 2209. No need to run fast and will smash up close out to long beyond 350. Not expensive either

I shoot 6.5 ttsx 100 gr at 3300fps (not a creedmore). 350 yds is fine I don't know where they run out of steam but have dropped a big boddied stag on the spot at 380.

You need around 2000fps impact velocity for them to work reliably, have used the 120 GMX from hornady at same velocity and they work very well.

I'm going to be trying the 110 gn ttsx in my 270win hoping for 3260fps which should be achievable with adi 2209 powder
That would see a light recoil, super flat trajectory (4" drop at 400 yards) and 2100fps and just over 1000ft/lbs out to 500 yards
Just to try something different, rifle will be suppressed as well.

No, I agree with your first sentiment. Brian’s rifle is launching them a lot quicker than a creedmore. I shoot 130ttsx at 3k out of a .308, and if shot placement is not perfect out at 400, then they don’t open up that well

I wonder if the 150gn ttsx might be better in the rem mag ?
Load data predicts you may get 3230fps with the 120gn where as with the 150gn you can still achieve 3115fps
I guess it would be light recoiling, but having shot 150gn barnes sako ammo through my rem mag I didn't find it to bad on recoil.

As other have said above; shot placement and velocity is important. The mono need speed to be effective as they don't have a soft core like lead core bullets. The weight of the bullet is not important, it is how fast it is traveling on impact. I work on 2100 - 2200fps as a minimum velocity, then you can work out the maximum terminal ballistic range - providing you hit bone!
The results when working within the above parameters can be impressive! Especially on big body animals.
I have also seen some not so flash results when the projectile has not meet enough resistance on impact.
I tend to use these kind of loads as a spook and shoot type scenario. For instance I have a 6.5 prc shooting the 120ttsx at 3320fps, with my rifle zeroed at 300 yards(3 inches high at 100) I know I can point and shoot out to 400. Anything beyond 400 I tend to dial up with a softer fragmenting projectile, in my case the 147 eldm.
    Hope this helps

Tried 110 barnes in a 300win mag. Didn't group well but were doing 3800 fps.
Might be time to have another play with them.

i was mostly after a recoil reduction as this will be run bare in creeks and slips country.
I'm going to start out with 145gr speer btsp downloaded to ~2900. Might do a few water jug tests to get an idea of penetration(aka fun)
