I am about to try some 50gn Barnes TSX in my 223 and seem to remember seeing somewhere that they like to be seated 50 to 100 thou off the land for best accuracy. Anyone have any experience with this?

Yes. YMMV. You just gotta try it.
I load Barnes in 243, 270, 30 and 375 cals. Yes to being seated off the lands for desired accuracy. Start at 50 thou and if necessary vary depth deeper until you find what works.
Thanks. The main reason I am asking is because the rifle seems to have a short throat so getting the bullet even 10 thou off is eating into powder space using AR2206H. I know I have a few options (different powder, lengthen throat) but I would like to see how they go on game before I make any major changes.
You won't have issues. 2206h 25.1grns fits easy as with still wiggle room. I just seated to same as everything else and they are great.
I wouldn't be too concerned about compressing it a bit.
My 308 barnes load is full to top of brass with 2206h so pretty heavily compressed with no issues.
You could also use a drop tube that helps stack it in there better.
Seat them to top cannelure. Running 53gr Barnes TSX in a Tikka . VERY ACCURATE.
They go bang, hit where aimed and kill stuff,I couldn't care less what velocity is lol.
Yip under 200 with .223 or I don't shoot. I much much happier under 150 with .223 and are happy with living with that. I know one day I will have to let good animal walk away due to my limits..but I'm happy with that too. I like them to die quick and to be certain that's going to happen before I squeeze off.
The TSX isn't much good at any distance where you need to care about drop anyway
But they sure are up close lol.
@TeRei. What sort of distance are you using the 53gns to on game?
Think velocity rather than distance.the faster they going the better/ further they expand. Look at the graduated photos and from my experience they about right.
I reckon you need about 2400fps impact V
So you are probably talking under 200 yards.
No, the trick is to use the first (this bullet only has one) drive band as your seating depth/crimp ring/cannelure.

Don't bother playing with seating depth, load up powder charges until you find pressure. If the accuracy is not there, either you barrel twist is too slow or try another powder/more neck tension.
All factory ammo is made to a spec of seating depth, yet it suits the majority of firearms (if the ammo is good and firearm in spec).
Don't burn components needlessly.
Mostly 2 hundy because head and neck shooting. I think the 53gr beats the 55gr. Fired up with BM2 they really tag deer very well. Becomes a confidence thing after a while. They are an amazing pill. Yet currently loading 300 55gr GMK for my mate up the Raukumaras. Funny because I loaded 3 hundy triple deuce for him last month. Same pill.
I tried some ttsx in a 270wsm with a super long throat and couldn’t get anywhere near the lands. From memory ended up nearly .200 off and it still shot under an inch. Seating depth wasn’t that critical on that one.
I got some advice off Jaco about the 110gr TTSX. The only rainbow juice I had was 748. The manual suggested a range from 52 to 47gr's. Thought I would try backwards. The 52 was a complete waste of time. The powder was to the top of the neck and spilling over. Nothing was achieved until I got to 47gr's. Then I had to settle the powder by tapping it. Seated to top of top cannelure. Out last night with my son and his mate. Big gully. Lines up on a fatty. The sound of that 110gr hitting that stag was impressive. Told them I had to stay there to ensure we did not get lost from our celestial navigation. Anyway lotsa hooping and then swearing. It was a 13pt velvety. They struggled back with back legs, head and backs. Funny beacuse I had loaded him some 150gr Sierra and a dozen 168gr TTSX. Dont think he wants any other pill. It just anchored that stag probably because he nailed it in the swede. Never used a 308 but most impressed how it performed. It is a dynamite pill.
