Thread: Barnes ttsx jump anyone got any experience ?

Hey team I'm looking at giving the barnes ttsx 110gn a whiz in my new 270win hoping to develop a light recoiling flat shooting load thats good out to 400-500 yards, more than likely it will be used at much closer ranges 100-300yards but just want to quote the extreme.
I've done some research using streelok and a few different sources for charge weight and expected speed and it looks do-able.
I'm hoping to get around 3200fps-3300fps which should give me all I need to suit the intend use.
I have my powder and charge weights sorted for my ladder and according to barnes website there ttsx pills reccomend starting at .050" off the lands.
I'm just wondering if anyone has had any real world experience with the ttsx and what they found worked as far as jump is concerned ?
I know every rifle is different and no matter the responses I will develop my own load just curious to hear what others have experienced ?

I've used the 130gn TTSX out of my 308 at 2900fps (chrony was off) I have now shot 6 reds with it. Put it short, if it's going in a bush gun, Sure.
I personally won't shoot anything further than 200ish metres with it. Unless you want to smash both front wheels each time.
I much prefer the "killing power" of a cup and core poked through lungs and heart behind the legs (saves meat too).

I know the above will generate some.... Discussion... However it's my experience.

50k has worked in everything I've tried them in.

They're a traditional tangent design bullet, rather than a more secant/VLD. I've not found them to be particularly sensitive to depth and I suspect this is why.

I suspect the 50k recommendation is because keeping them that far from the rifling helps keep the pressure down more than anything else.

As for suitability at that distance. No comment. Speer do a 90 and a 115 grain gold dot though - would be very tempted to try one of those.

in my 7mm rem mag it liked like most Tikka's a longer jump in mine (60 thou jump.)

I used it in tandem with a 162 A-max being my up the spout round, but quite a bit heavier than 110. (I used the 110 TTSX-x in my 300 blackout 30cal) I'll need to look at my old reloading notes. But I think I spoke about what I was using on here.
No to using it further out as per above I had the Amax for that, and a same POI under 150m made it easy to manage.

Maybe I would be better off sticking to my tried and trusted eldx ?
Pardon my ignorance but I thought for the barnes ttsx to work they needed velocity of 2000fps or more and in excess of 1000ft/lbs as long as you hit bone ? Certainly a muzzle velocity in the region of 3260fps would make this possible to 500 yards ?
Have I been mis informed ? Not sayng your wrong at all in fact I'm sure your probably right just trying to understand ?
If not the what would you suggest would be the maximum ethical range ?

Appreciate the input fellas, maybe I was naive to think a lighter harder bullet going faster could deliver the same result as a heavier softer one going slower (all things are not equal it would seem, I'm not into chasing wounded animals and unless anyone can shed anymore light on this I think I will just stick to my 145gn ELDX in the 270win I have plenty of experience using them and they are proven effective .

could do but in my experience the eldx will also do that just as effectively....

so what were you wanting to do with the barnes? Are the eldx no good for you at 500?

I was just going to try something different, but if it's not fit for purpose I'll stick with my boringly accurate and boringly effective ELDX, haven't had to use them out to 500 yards yet and to be fair it's unlikely that I would but I like to know that they can should the conditions and opportunity present itself.
probably just sell the Barnes pills off i have a 30-30 if I want to bush hunt and be limited to 200 yards

Used Barnes 110g in 7-08 they up to the task and serious hitters, everyone has a special opinion same as vehicles, lawnmowers, politics and so on. If I was you give them a go with at least 75 thou jump. Cheers

Mine went good at 60 from memory.
Good meat savers, need High impact velocities to work well.
