    Belmont 748 powder

Has any one tried the Belmont 748 powder, I am thinking of getting some to try in my 308 WBY and 8mm mauser, currently am using ar2208 with good results. I have found load data for winchester748 which is apparently the same powder as Belmont? Thought I would give it a go as its reasonably priced.

W748 is fine in a .308 with med weight bullets but it's not temp-stable like 2208. It can produce high velocities- 3000 fps with 150s in a 30"bbl. Fullbore shooters tried it decades ago but it never performed well at long range, not that it would worry most deershooters.

The Winchester ball powder that Belmont sells under their own label is actually 747, the bulk commercial brother to 748 but slightly faster in burning rate.

I use W748 in my 308 with great results behind 165gr projectiles.

Can't get better than bang flop minute of deer.

    Cheers

I played around with it in my 260 but it was really unreliable, i could get good groups with it then the next day shoot the exact same load and it was all over the show, as mentioned before I think its limiting factor is temp stability

Belmont Action Rifle is 747 but Belmont 748 is Win748 repackaged from bulk.

They are two different products from Belmont

You've worded it somewhat better- I couldn't recall what they named the 747.

I used 748 for years in my .223, and true to the info about burn speed, the 747 needed backing off slightly in that same gun.

2208 is the to to powder for 308 and if your already using it why change as 748 burns real dirty. It's also not as good in 308 as the 2208. It's slightly cheaper to buy and goes well through a thrower but unless your reloading massive volumes for say service rifle use I wouldn't change.

I do live using 748 in the ar though (apart from it being a dirty powder)

My experience with .308 is the faster burning AR2206H gives better velocity and equal consistency to AR2208 with 125-150gr bullets, especially in 20" or shorter barrels . I find that AR2008 is great with 165gr .308 and 150gr in 22" and longer barrels.

W748 is definitely a dirty powder. It also seems to give more consistency day to day by loading it with magnum primers which can raise the pressure so usual reloading safety procedures to apply.

I want to try their Alliant power pro 2000 mr in my 260 or in mates 308's. Sounds a bit like Superformance as a good way of squeezing a few extra fps

Thanks for the heads up, they are out of stock of the 748 so ordered more 2208 and save the hassel and development
    cheers.
