I've picked rust flakes out of powder that was still dry and smelled good, put it in clean plastic and preceeded to load it up and shoot it. Went just fine. But then I've worked a bit with old powders and yes, some went out as fertilizer. Your mileage may differ.
Often wondered about the concern that container has started to rust. Just proves its an old container.
I'm with you, concern yourself with the condition of the powder.
