There certainly was a nice stock under there
It's a pretty unusual piece of walnut

And the grips took a long time to clean out but now look and feel awesome

neat to see this getting such attention and it looks great

The pineapple detail on the finial and nice engraving on the fore end rod pipe

Have you tried sweating the oil out? I have had pretty limited success with solvents,the old oil wicked into the cleaned wood fibers.

Yes I've tried a few different techniques in the past.

But in this one I've stuck with solvents and then turps to clean.
Alternated solvent turps, solvent turps etc.

In this case that was the safe option.
The bottom metal and finial, front engraved pipe, butt plate and hooked reciever are so tightly inletted into the wood that I chose not to tempt fate and remove them.
They all have very tight engraved screw heads.
The old dry gun oil had effectively glued the wood and steel together.
Solvents got in to the edges pretty well and the stock has cleaned up better than I expected.

Also with this being a genuine well used original I still want it to show its age and that it has not just been a cabinet queen

I think that some of the grain in the stock looks very tight and under tension, obviously not or it would of split, but it looks like a difficult piece of timber to shape

It's a "beautiful" thing.

The travel case is now fully functional.
Repaired where able
Parts replaced where beyond repair
The whole thing rejuvenated

Would this handle suit it better? also found old possibles bag if you want it,bit rough but could tidy up alright.

They both look useful.
Due to drop in and see you when I'm in town maybe next week.
Starting to get the itch to get away and take it hunting now that we are seeing some sunshine down here for a change

the photos dont do this justice.......a great privilidge is was indeed to make it make some noise..thankyou again....maybe next time I shall hit what Im aiming at a bit better/flinch less LOL....he says hanging head in shame.

And now I need to re regulate it all over again
Different tighter fitting balls and thinner patches

So really a start over and try and get them back together at 50m

But Yes, pulling the already fired front trigger and associated flinch was a real "own goal"
