Any ideas on a low recoil load for my boy to use on deer?i have some 125g sst pills here and 2206h powder ,running a suppressed 16in .308,thinking 35g would be a good start,just bush hunting Sika ,was looking for around 7.62x39 speeds as a recoil table I have seen puts that caliber at the lower end and have used a mini 30 in the past and it always killed well. Thanks
sounds about right.....see if you can find some speer 130grn HPs ....they work at even slower speeds and will open up very well on sika hind sized animal even at low speed....we had great results with the 125grn ballistic tip too in the x39mm
if unsure of powder charge...go to start load in manual....cant go wrong and 125grn projectiles have low recoil anyway.
Or load 30-30 projectiles at 30-30 speeds
Imr 4198 works great for reduced recoil loads. Try 31gr with a 125-130gr. It should give around 2250 fps in your short barrel.
If you want a bit faster, just work your way up.
Imr 4198 generally gives much better accuracy than reduced charges of 2206h
I hurt my shoulder so i loaded up some 125gr sst with 44gr of action rifle powder and used a suppressor that also reduced recoil 2206H should be a good powder as well if thats what you have
Are all powders suitable for downloading?
I know hogdon list h4895 at 60% of max charge.
I'd be interested as i'm downloading a 7mm08 at min. published data @ ~2550 with win760. I'd like to go a bit lower to around 2200-2300 but don't understand internal ballistics well enough.
You are on the right track using the best powder for the job.

No not all, the only 2 I have heard of is H4985 (2206-H) as listed above, and Trailboss which will give you very slow speeds even subsonic.Quote:

I use 38 grains of AR2206H behind a 150 grain Hornady spire point or round nose projectile that chronographs 2,350 fps in a 22 inch barrel. Nice soft load and softer with a suppressor. The same charge would be fine with the 125 or 130 grains and give slightly more velocity. 40 grains would be close to 2,500 fps. AR2206H shoots accurately with reduced loads.

Ive done a fair bit of reduced recoil load testing in '08 cases and in 223. H4895 (2206H) is well know that you can load down to 60% of a max charge for any cartridge that has data for that powder, however the accuracy (grouping is generally not that great).
IMR4198 is the powder that Remington use in their factory reduced recoil/Youth ammo. Ive tested both 2206h and IMR 4198 in reduced recoil load in various cartridges, 260 rem, 7mm08 and 223, and all of them shoot much much smaller groups with the IMR4198.
30-31gr of IMR 4198 in a 260 rem/7mm08/308 will work well with 120-130gr bullets.
14gr of 4198 behind a 55gr shoots tiny little groups in my 223.
I honestly wouldnt bother trying 2206h/H4895. Just buy IMR4198.
I do my full powerloads with2206h ,43g behind 150g Core-Lokt or interlocks ,not keen on buying different powders ,just gonna stick to the one fornow,also have trail boss and some 2205 pistol powder here left over over from the 44mag.
Fair enough, a reduced load of 2206H will work, just possibly not as accurately as IMR4198, but when limited to the short ranges of a reduced load it probably wont be a problem.Quote:

Yep got a can on the gun,bush hunting so anything around 2in @ 50m is good enough.rfeally trying to turn my .308 into a 7.62x39..
just load up some start level loads and see what they go like....no need to overcomplicate it.

Going for the best accuracy in my opinion is fine but not really needed here. If the shots all go into 2 to 3 inches at 100 yards it will be fine for a bush spook n shoot rifle.
More inaccuracy is introduced by the shooter waving about when taking a standing shot than comes from the bullet. If your are moving a couple of inches in the aim a 1/4 moa rifle won't be better than one that shoots 2 1/2 inches fact the less accurate round may sometimes actually help by countering some of the shooter error.
Anyhow even at 200 yards the cone of error is still about the size of the kill zone on medium sized game, just don't try head or neck shots.
Never shot a deer over 80m away so shouldn’t be a problem..no chrono so speed will be a guess..my sako has never shot a load over 2in @ 100m no matter what I throw down the tube ,she is pretty forgiving in that regard luckily.
For reduced 308 loads you could just look at 307 Winchester and use those , if you want ?.

You can look at reloading data, for single shot pistols, if what you have doesn't work out.
2500 is a reduced load in a 30-30?
Makes my 1800fps when working up a full power load look pretty anaemic. 16 inch barrel though.
