I like the look of that....hollow point would be even better...but like that very much......when are you heading up this way next???I will load you wagon up with small dropped bird shot to melt down and make some more...how much have I got??? well it could make your wagon drag arse on ground ..I wouldnt like to shift it all at once in wheelbarrow.I could try a few of them 405s out and report back if you like LOL.

We can sort something out in the New Year Micky D . . you don't need a Hollowpoint with this bullet, it does plenty of damage on the way thru & penetration is spectacular.
It's a funny thing how it's just over twice as heavy as the 197grn. 30 cal but outperforms it by a massive margin, just smashes thru bone n muscle going the whole length of an animal . . and that's subsonic
Be interesting to see your opinion.

well actually.....she is a bit of a forum special.
    barrel was made by Doug/homebrew
    was turned down by RUMPY
and slides into a old .12ga I remember going into police station to get permit to purchase with my Dad when I was only about 5-6
so its sort of a super insert and goes rather well.

if a man was to get 2 molds of the same bullet shape, weight etc but one was paperpatched with smooth sides and the other had aggressive driving bands, both were filmed with high speed cameras going thru something like gelatin and 100s of animals shot you would have a better idea . . i would say Yes it will make a difference but a very small one, much more important factors at play . . ask me again in the future i might have changed my mind . . whats your thoughts ?

my favourite boolit of all time is the 405grn RCBS i have for the .45/70
saw the mold on TradeMe years before i even had a .45/70 or thought i might get one, it just looked like the perfect design to me, still does, so i grabbed it . . which means of course at some stage i am going to get a .45/70 just to use it.

    Attachment 186517

my favourite mold for .30 calibers is the 197grn. RCBS . . accuracy, terminal performance between it and the 170grn. Lyman is hard to tell them apart . . but i just like the 197 more . . go figure.
I have read in the past that driving bands versus smooth sides make a considerable difference in monolithic solids at high velocity and I wondered if the same was true of subsonic projectiles.
The difference in the 220 swift was that with a turned brass projectile at very high velocity 3800 + there was almost no effect on a rabbit ( rabbit was seen to be hit but just flattened its ears) with a smooth projectile but with the next projectile which was turned to exactly the same weight and profile but had driving bands, converted the rabbit into confetti

interesting . . i went looking for Shadowgraphs of bullets with driving bands showing the shock waves but i couldnt find a good example, this is the best i could find but i have seen better examples.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:S...hadowgraph.jpg

i had always thought of the driving bands as just creating drag more than the added benefit of multiple pressure waves . . so cheers for that
@Moa Hunter it may help to explain why cast bullets at even moderate supersonic speeds seem to kill so much better than i would have guessed by only adding 3-400 fps compared to the 1000fps of subsonic.

@rossi.45 So from the image and explanation given with it, the driving bands create a shock wave which must, I am guessing, prolong and add to the wound channel disruption created at the front of the projectile, perhaps even broadening the permanent wound channel ?. The reason I started to re-ponder this matter was after reading one of your posts where one cast bullet had a better terminal effect than another of a similar weight and velocity. Very interesting image, which helps explain the effect of the metplat

    so thats std .12ga shell
redneck .410 adaptor (yes its bit of half inch pipe through a shell and yes it works and patterns fine)
3" long chamber insert to fire .410 or .45LC in .12ga
12" long chamber insert the same...works VERY well with .410 shells
and finally the "hefalump gun" mighty .45/70 insert.

Looks like a very versatile shooting system you have there Micky . . What kind of velocity are you aiming for and what range are you expecting to shoot out to ?

A useful peice of kit indeed. How many hefalumps has the 45-70 accounted for thus far? They seem to be in quite low numbers in the Kawekas. Probably just as well I would hate to have to carry one out.
    Regards Grandpamac.

well its minute of tennis ball at 75yards....that was with cruder sights, just shotgun bead..... I would draw line at 150ish yards as would need to be certain of hitting well and without lots of testing...drop past that would be guestimate.
Ive thought about glueing a section of piccy rail on so to add scope...but that would defeat purpose and the other rifles in cabinet do that job well already.
as it is.....a wet day is ideal....dont have to worry about scope getting wet....and for them days where just want to do something different it ticks the boxes well.
its not quite muzzle loader primative, but it scratches the itch to use home rolled black powder and cast rather well.
