    Casting Boolits

    After a hiatus of 27 years I am going to shoot my muzzle loaders again.

    I have located most of all my gear – moulds, casting pot, dipper, lead, powder, caps etc. (Fark you need a lot of shit for M/Loading.) Even found all my Snider and Martini-Henry brass so may even get them out eventually.

    What I cannot find is the rosin I used to flux the casting pot with.

    I still have heaps or pure bees wax which I could use and a small quantity of rosin cored solder which I can throw in which will flux the pot without changing the pure lead composition. Well hardly at all.

    So, what are people using for flux these days?

    @P38 suggested I use a tea candle next batch of sinkers.

    There are only three types of people in this world. Those that can count, and those that can't!

    I use old hickory hammer handles that I whack the sprue plate with, once they are stuffed, the carbon from the burnt wood is an excellent flux,
    Pine kindling is good too as long as it is bone dry, bees wax is ok but rather messy and does smoke the work shop out, I use it a little when smelting
    wheel weights and scrap lead but never in the casting pot.

    i use some of my home made boolit lube ( beeswax/high temp grease ) then a peice of wood that has enough moisture in it, but not to much, to get the lead boiling to help bring any impurities to the surface . . . flux as needed during the boolit making process . . . works for me.

    without a picture . .. it never happened !

    @zimmer

    Parrifin (candle wax) or dry saw dust are excellent fluxes when smelting lead.

    Both act as a reductant to reverse the oxidation of the tin and antimony which can then be mixed back into the lead to ensure a good alloy.

    Why haven't you done this simple task already?

    Is there a boogie man in your garage

    Cheers
