    I use old hickory hammer handles that I whack the sprue plate with, once they are stuffed, the carbon from the burnt wood is an excellent flux,
    Pine kindling is good too as long as it is bone dry, bees wax is ok but rather messy and does smoke the work shop out, I use it a little when smelting
    wheel weights and scrap lead but never in the casting pot.
