Hi looking for a new chronograph as mine doesn't pick up shots when it is under the roof at our local range what's everyone using and whats the best?
Cant go past the magnetospeed V3 imo. It has been rated against the latest radar chrony for MV and proved to be as accurate. Easy to use and setup.
Progressed thru Chrony F1 to CED (2 of including Infra Red screen) to a Magnetospeed V2. I swear by the MS. Unfortunately will not fit my military style stocked rifles so then have to pull out the CED. CED is a pain in the arse to set up compared to the MS. I shoot rifle at my local pistol club and if you are setting up an optical chronograph with 9 other shooters waiting on you you get a bit of stick. No such problem with MS. Only thing is the MS tends to move the group centre away from the sensor fractionally but does not affect group size on any of my rifles. It may affect super thin barrels though, I don't know on that one. I have shot full strings of F Class with it attached and my scores were still excellent. Final zeroing I check with MS removed.
I have a magnetospeed love it ... had a sonic ??? the orange one I had it to close to muzzle 500mm 300 wm ..muzzle blast smashed led display wasn't very happy after that :smash:
MagnetoSpeed, simple and accurate.
I had an Alpha and got fed up setting up in line with target to do groups at same time so got a Steinert accoustic chrono. Not used too much but they are fussy it seems... if it doesn't work well will have bro in law bring over a Lab Radar.
Cancelled my Labradar order, it wouldn't do what I wanted it to do, isn't brake friendly & needs to be close to the muzzle to work.
Get the MS, I'm really happy with my V2
The only draw back is shooting for accuracy & precision with it on the barrel, some are effected more than others, I use my Oehler 35P for that.
I'm more confident with the MS's velocities, to be fair there is little difference though.
Surprised to hear labradar has to be close to muzzle and blast affected....that would be disappointing. Looked at MS but went accoustic so no POI aim...but needs to be set up spot on for confidence with velocities...and doesn't do SD...a PITA.
Thanks for that guys I see Wilson's in Wanganui sell them so might have to go that way.
Yeh, was in there a month back and he had one in stock. Doesn't seem to carry many at a time.
You can also buy direct from MS now. Mate bought the Sporter model. Had it in hand in 7 days.
The Sporter model is a bit watered down for my liking and the V3 is the biz.
Year have looked at getting direct but with the exchange rate and if I get stung for GST and duty it may not be worth it.
Sorry who is MS??
MS = Magneto Speed.
Review: Sniper's Hide - Long Range Shooting, Precision Marksmanship, Gear Testing & Reviews - Scout Front Page
Nice review. Incidentally I registered to buy a LabRadar (I think a few others on the Forum may have as well) when they first canvassed for support but have long since given up on the company. Plus as pointed out in the review, is the extra spend really worth it.
Yes I did the same. Will see how the Steinert chrony goes...bought for same premise, no screens and not light affected, no messy cables...but no SD is a fail.
Why do you need SD? ES is fully meaningful as long as you take a reasonable sample. Actually, same applies to SD.
If you really demand SD, buy a $20 stats calculator
Actually, I'm wrong, you can get a free stats app for your phone
Seemed to me an easy thing to inc at push of a button.
10 shots for sd really IMHO.
any spreadseet will do sd.
I got this,

$135us
I am mostly happy with it but seems to err2 a bit too much but that might be me. Postage from Brownells by cheapest is about $45US I think, so around $180US.
Spend 7 hours using it today for 200 odd 223 rounds, and experimented a bit more. My conclusion is, you need to keep the bullet in the lower half and fairly close to the centre line or it will err2 or err3. It doesnt like a big muzzle blast ie 3000fps off a 308w, but 2450fps off a 303brit or 2700fps off a 223 no problems works every time. So either it would have to be positioned further away or buy something else for bigger calibers / magnums, for what I paid though and what I use it for I am happy with it. It connects to a smart phone to give SD etc via the 3.5mm sound jack.
So I took your guys advise and brought a MagnetoSpeed, tried it last night and man is it easy to use bloody great buy.
So if any one wants a Pro-chrono Plus I have one for sale.
Congratulations on the purchase! Where'd you get it and how much did you pay if I may ask? Was it the sporter or full version?
Hi WillB got it from Wilson's in Wanganui I did email MS in the states but they wouldn't sell direct now and put me onto NZ agents. And when you work out the cost, if you got hit with gst which is highly possible it gets pretty close to what I paid.
I paid $899 for the full version.
I have a 35P and I brought a MS V3 recently , I did not think the MS V3 would be as good as it has turned out to be , its very quick to set up and very small size wise compared to the 35P , and the accuracy is on a par with the 35P from what I hear .
The 35P suits using on your own range , and basically leaving the stands/mounting points up etc , as it does take time to set up on the tripods etc , so for someone who does not own their own range the MS is much more suitable in every way .
Just be aware thier is a sensitivity setting , which you need to change from std jackets to say lead bullets , like 22LR etc for it to be able to read the bullets .
recently repaired an "edy" chrono, what a load pf c**p
I am not ruling out the doppler radar jobbie , but at the moment its a bit too new & buggy , give them sometime and it should mature into something good , hope they make it capable of being ON all the time with a external power supply , over the way it operates now .
The export version of the LabRadar may never be worth the money due to them having to limit the power of the radar over the domestic model such that downrange velocities available are limited to only a relatively short distance from the shooter. The MagnetoSpeed is the best chronograph by far out of the 3 types I have owned to date. The final straw for me with the optical types was one of those days when light conditions were not optimum for optical chronies (even with sky filters) and my CED was telling me my 22RF was doing 3300 fps every third shot whilst a mates 35P wasn't picking up every one of his shots. Plus the day to day variability of optical chronies even when they are working "OK".
Still got hope for my Superchrony. Don't think Canada, Oz and NZ are getting downgraded one. MS probably is easiest to use, just shoot a confirming post-MS group to ensure properly on target.
I take it these magnetospeeds are no good for use with a suppressor?
Its about 0.25 inche in old money , and there is a 0.25 , 1/4 inche , square section rod , and you use it to align the bottom of the bore , here's some quick pics to show a rough alignment for you , it also has a silicon protector to put under the nylon strap .
This is the V3 model .

You just mix & match the 5 different spacers to get the rod close to the bottom of the bore , easier to do than explain .
Must say rethinking looking at that bit of kit.
Just to be clear , that square rod is only used to get the height correct , once you have that , you remove the rod , before shooting .
Mate bought their el cheepo one and machined out the clamp so it would fit big heavy non tapered barrels.
I don't use the square rod to set my V2 up. I use a carbon fibre cleaning rod (non magnetic so doesn't stick to the sensors) which I poke a fair way done the muzzle and the support in such a way that it is sitting on the bottom of the barrel. I then set the gap at around 4mm under both sensors. Problem with my V2 Bayonet is something its out of wack. If you clamp the bayonet to the barrel and then check the bayonet rises to the last sensor. This is made worse on heavy tapered barrels. I use a folded up piece of card in the front of the clamp to get the bore alignment parallel with the sensors. Just using the rod only tells you the clearance at the muzzle but not whether the whole set up is parallel. Last thing I do b4 firing is eyeball thru the tube - if I cannot see the bayonet she's good to go. Then after the first shot I recheck the tightness of the clamp. Never had one loosen though. Sounds all like a lot of messing around but the MagnetoSpeed is brilliant to set up compared to an optical device. Usually up and running in about 6 minutes compared with traipsing forward and back to set up an optical chrony.
That's exactly what I'm looking for. Now to justify the cost. :XD:
Got cunning and ordered parts from magnetospeed website. Got the blade with strap, spacers, strap protectors and the phone cable for under NZ$370.
