Do all dies fit any press or if I got the lee press does it have to take lee dies.
Almost all dies (except arbour) will fit. Can't remember the thread but its an imperial one. Lee, Redding, RCBS, Lyman, Hornady all the same in what you'll find off the shelf.
Thank you, That's what I was hoping to hear.
Google is your friend : 7/8-14 (7/8" diameter, 14 threads per inch)
The breechblock press (I think this is the one in the kit you got Toby), has bushings, and those bushings accept the standard thread above...
cool, Haven't got it just yet. Went to buy it yesterday but didn't know how to work the internet banking crap so I asked mum she said she will do it later but didn't then came here and heard they don't open until the 3rd so will get her to do it tomorrow.
Toby, be aware that there are two flavours of the Lee single stage press kits.
The Anniversary kit includes the Lee safety prime, so you prime on the press.
The Breech Lock kit includes the Auto prime XR, so you prime off the press.
Comes down to personal preference, I prefer to prime on the press for both handgun and rifle cases. The levers on the Lee hand prime were too flimsy for me... Would be interesting to hear what other people's preferences are for priming on or off the press.
Make sure you know which version you are getting, ask them what priming tools is included.
The anniversary kit is $200 @ Reloaders.

The second one down was what I was looking at.
Hi Toby I would look a something a little better than lee it comes down to $$$but my lee is very light compared to my RCBS. You can get a 1-1/4 threaded press that bushes down to the 7/8 handy if you decide to load bigger cartridges in the future. Lee dies can be a little weak as well if reloading a lot of ammo. You can also get quick change bushes for your dies for some presses real good, hornady do one I think
Maca49, if you (or anyone else for that matter) have an unloved Lee kit languishing in your shed, I'd quite happily pay for shipping
It would get well used...
Lee can't be too bad if ebf would use it. I would say it will be good enough for what I want.
I have a Lee anniversary press, with breechlock quick change. Only reloaded about 2000 cartridges so far and havent found any weakness yet with the gear. Anything can be broken if you are rough enough, use good lube.
Toby - a bit further on die threads. 4 types (maybe more even...) 1 1/2" x 12TPI for 50 cal (you aren't quite into that yet are you?), standard 7/8" x 14TPI, the Australian Simplex dies (smaller than the 7/8" cannot remember the thread, they occasionally come up on Tardme), and 5/8" x 30TPI Lyman 310 dies (the old hand tool dies, rarely seen now). I still have Lyman 310 dies in 308 and 22-250 which were the original setup I started loading with. Commonly now when people refer to reloading dies it is the 7/8" variety. Re priming - my preference is not by the press but with a hand held tool. I use an RCBS but others love the Lee. You have a much better feel when priming with a hand tool than with the press.
Righto :D

Im just loading some 45/70 and use it to seat my 577/450 From an engineers perspective you get what you pay for and My personal thoughts are they are made for price not quality - personal view, it achieves all I need. Same with Lee dies and their alloy projectile moulds.
lee anniversary kit is what i bought from reloaders last year. I didnt no the first thing about reloading but this kit has honestly been the best thing i have bought to date. It came with all the little case prep tools, priming tools and everything needed to get started. sure its not the best quality but it does definitely do the job.
I wish i knew about this forum before i got into rifles as you learn so much here, i still think i would have bought the lie kit anyway as it just has everything you need to get some pills downrange.
In terms of dies, i have used lee, lyman and hornady. Hornady and lyman dies definitely feel nicer. The best die i have used yet is a lee collet die for neck sizing 204. Man is that thing a time saver and easy to use.
Maca49 - I shot a lot of goats with my MH. Dead on the spot, even with a mild load and solid slug. Also shot a few with my Musketoon. Never took the Snider out for goats and never trusted my arm to take any of them for deer. Should have done though whilst I had the opportunity. What model MH have you got?
Kit should be here next week hopefully dies came yesterday for .270 anyway, haven't heard back about .300wsm dies yet. Can't wait this is better then Xmas

It's still not here yet :( but I will do when it gets here.
Kits finally here. I lost something in it all ready which sucks. I will keep looking
I bought some Horandy dies which I really like, especially the bullet seater.
be carefull with the collet neck die...if its not giving you enough tension on the neck DONT FORCE IT TO GET MORE as it wont give you more it will just pop the threads on the top cap. No lube to be used with the neck die but do clean the inside of the neck with a bore brush or something as that has to be clean to work well, bore brush mounted to the bench works well :)
if it came with the white lee lube be aware it is water based so if you leave it in the die it will rust the die.... I use redding sizing wax. Dont use Hornady one shot, that is the lube you here people are using if they get stuck cases :)
I know this is a dies thread but here is a good set of scales on TardMe Ohaus Reloading Scale | Trade Me
Thanks for all the help guys. I have loaded 24 .270 shells. I have to say weighing the powder is a pain in the ass but it is worth it when you have shiny new loaded ammo ready. Gonna test tomorrow this arvo was busy bloody cuttinf up venison. Will put up a pic of the shells later
Good stuff Toby, welcome to the wonderful world of reloading, you won't ever regret it
Have a John Reeves London sporting rifle They are fun to shoot just getting some 86grain rounds together as have not fired a nose bleeder as yet. I have a Harrington and Richards 45-70, a 1904sxs Williams Evans 12 g just restocked by Ian Gaskill in Raglan, it came up a treat and a parker hale 2 band 54 cal Enfield. But like the cartridge guns better. Shooting Tauranga on Sunday.
Have the mh in bits building up the block pivots as the firing pin was hitting low on the primers and causing misfires, shows off my flinch real good!
You been using brasso?
Yup
The glare will scare the game when you load?
They cant see it when its in the chamber :D I loaded a heap more just now took 1 1/2 hours. Tested 10 shots and boy do they make factory ammo shit, all touching and only 27 fps difference in the loads. Is that good from the highland stuff we tried its better.
Attachment 6072
27 fps difference between 10 new rounds, or average diff between reloads and bought ammo ?
I'm assuming the first, which is very good, means you were being careful and accurate when measuring the powder
Very careful. Is 3-5min per round slow? Thats what I seem to average. The scales move easy like 1 pellet of the powder moves it. Pain in the ass with that part but seeing it finished is worth it.
Good, keep it up. Slow is good, easy to get distracted or careless, and blow up a barrel or worse.
