Do I need a police permit to bring in live ammo

I've found a place with a heap( for this day and age) 17 hornet ammo, now reading a post re bringing in primers it's been said you can bring in ammo but not primers.
It be good if I could chuck in a couple of 50 packets in my pack, and it sounds like air nz is not averse the the idea. Tia.

Pretty sure you'd need an import permit.

Reloading components are worth less than the sum of their parts, the primers and powder are just DG's. The moment you assemble it, it becomes ammo. Firearms and ammo need import permits.

Brass and projectiles were ok. Brother brought them over.
He just had to get them looked at at the airport. Place where they do the oversize luggage.
Shops here wont post gun stuff to NZ.

Having a bit of trouble getting the head around this. I can bring over a rifle and some ammo with an (import) permit, not bringing it back to Oz so no worries there. Would then only need a permit to bring into nz, so how hard can that be?
We don't have a local firearms officer here at present, last one got tired, can't ask him that question.
