Just loading up some 6.5CM with brand new Peterson brass, necked to 0.001 under projectile dia. and the tips are getting crushed when used in my new L.E. Wilson chamber type seating die...
Any ideas? Just need to fireform the brass maybe?

dunno if this helps or is even your issue but when I started loading ELDX I had to get the seating die machined out to suit the longer projectile otherwise the tips would hit the end of the die as the shape is different to most other projectiles
Hmm I don't have a concentricity gauge but visually they still look round. I think the neck tension is just too high, but at 0.001" under it should be sweet. I'll just fire them off tomorrow and see what they do on the second round. Hopefully the brass will soften a bit
You can get vld steem for seating dies that suit the longer projectiles that stop that from happening i think hornady or reeding do them as parts
they are the only projectile I load in 270 so I just got the one I had machined to suit was like $10 or $15 at gunworks dunno how much the replacement ones are ?Quote:

As above...looks like too much force to seat them. I get a faint ring on mine when seating.
I don't have a micrometer to measure so am relying on the dimensions of dies and annealing after 3 or 4 loads to avoid a lack of tension problem.
I don't use neck dies any more..just my preference

Dip the necks in graphite before seating the bullets. New brass creates more friction than fired brass which has a layer of carbon from the firing process (less friction).
Another part of the solution might be to get a powder funnel with a long drop tube so the powder takes up less of the case and therefore less pressure/crunch when seating.
The only time I get this is when using compressed loads.
One die I changed to a VDL stem which solved the problem. With my .260 using RL16 I had this problem as they were compressed loads, so I changed to Hodgdon superproformance powder and problem solved and it's a lot less bulkier powder.

Ok well I went out to the range today. A bit of background, brand new out of the box R700 in 6.5CM, dropped in a KRG Bravo, no trigger work (heavy AF), didn't lap the lugs or anything yet, never even fired a shot. Bore sighted it at 300yds, fired off the first 12 rounds charged with 36.0gr 2208, shot a pretty decent group for zero load dev , better than factory ammo anyway.
Then 2nd string 36.5gr 2208 and shot a 60 with 5 X's :wtfsmilie:
So the crushed jackets can stay as long as they like :thumbsup:

pretty sure there is something on Nathan Fosters site about this issue...as others have said they new super sleak shapes dont fit in older style seating stems.

I had this issue with my creedmoor with vlds and eldx vld stem fixed all issues
My basic Lee die has no issues with 180 ELDM
Eldx are longer again than eldm dunno if that makes a difference or the calibre but in 270 the tip was definitely hitting the top of the stem when seating
Can't edit my post but no issues with 162 ELD X or 180 ELD M for 7m Rem Mag
That is the internal diameter of the neck is 0.001" smaller than the measured projectile diameter. It's the same thing as 0.001" less than loaded
But if you didn't see the results on the first page, they shot pretty good!
A VLD stem may help but you arent bottoming out on the projectile tip anyways. But a VLD may give less of an angle onto the orgive.
@Kurt don't bother with the Hornady seating stem, it will do the same thing just not as bad. I had to go with the Redding VLD stem and seating die to not get any crimping. Got it from workshop innovations.

I have seen a ring around the top of vld projectiles when using my wilson seaters on brass with excessive neck tension but never dints like that. Are you having to really lean on the arbor press to get them to seat? did you chamfer the cases with a vld chamfering tool, are you lubing the case necks with graphite? Do you have a neck turning expander mandrel? if so I would run it through a few cases and try them. Is the brass brand new out of the bag or did you full length resize it for some reason first?

No excessive force required to seat, standard chamber, no lube, neck ID expanded to 0.001" less than projectile OD, brand new peterson brass, no full size just neck to reduce tensionQuote:

I'd deffinately reset your die. Take the stem right out and put it off to the side. Set up where the body of the die is sitting first. I let mine sit snug / little bit loose. Then put your stem back in and start winding it it down, checking oal as you go. If you use a fancy guage to find 2 thou off the lands then use that but i just take my firing pin out and find the touch point and wind it off 2 thou. Trial and error method. But point is, you are over camming your reloads. Its catching on the shoulder and you are forcing the heads to crush. I personally wouldnt shoot a munted bullet either as its not worth your entire rig eh
As above bro, you have a fundamental issue here....all good holding good groups out that far...I'm surprised.
I wouldn't be happy to continue shooting those loads myself
I don't follow, you did read that I use a chamber type seater die? Do you mean over cramming? The powder is not compressed and projectiles seated without too much pressure. I think its just that the there is nothing behind the jacket at the actual spot the standard stem make contact. We'll just have to wait and see if a VLD stem fixes it. The jackets weren't torn so I don't see the risk?Quote:
