F L resize or Neck size?

    Hey guys,

Who does what? Full length resize or Neck Resize.

I have an RCBS FL die and Seating die only. Wasn't sure if I should get a neck sizer or just do a full length each time.
    Does it mater?

    Cheers,
    Tim.

Full length first time and once the brass has been fired in my rifle I neck size. Don't notice a change in performance between the two but have been told neck sizing prolongs brass life.

Depends a bit what you are reloading for. For example if you are reloading for a semi then I would recommend you full length size everything. If you are reloading random or new cases then I would recommend you full length size everything. If you aren’t doing a lot of shooting, aren’t going for tiny groups, and aren’t hunting at ranges past about 500m then I would just full length size.

Neck sizing has advantage of working the brass less from reload to reload. You will also find you have a slightly higher velocity from only neck sizing. Also the cases will get tight to load in the chamber after a few reloads if you are only neck sizing and you will need to either full length size or bump the shoulders back on the cases to get them to load smooth again. Neck sizing won’t work very well if you are reloading random cases or for bullets for more than one rifle. Neck sizing only has the potential to be more consistent with your chamber and therefore slightly more accurate.

Personally I neck size for my bolt action rifles and every 5 or so reloads (or for a specific competition) I’ll bump the shoulders back. If I was only hunting I would likely full length size to ensure they load into the chamber as smooth as possible.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the comments lads... It is just hunting. But the whole process of Reloading for me is to improve accuracy and stretch my hunting out further.. I had a heap of once fired brass from factory ammo but silly me didnt seperate between my last .270 and current!! gotta love em! So Full Length Resize for now and once they're all fire formed to my newish chamber I should maybe be using a Neck Sizing die (anyone got a decent one lying around!?) Full length fine for now. Cheers. love this forum!

I'm the same as Gibber .. ecept

I Never FL size unless necessary - I only neck size and bump the shoulder back using the forster bush and bump die ....

that way your fire formed cases stay fire formed .... nice n tight as the actress said to the bishop ...

If you do get a lee collet die make sure you get it working properly. If you don't wind them down enough they wont do boo. It will feel like you are riding over a bump with the press near the bottom of the stroke when set right. PS fark up ya Ozzy!!
