Factory Rem 180 grn Core lokt ammo in 30-06

Doing some load development for a nice Win controlled feed Mod 70.
    Has a 24" barrel.
To get her on paper I used the factory rem ammo as per the title supplied with it.

Surprisingly only needed 2 shots to confirm zero after rifle was sent away for cerakote and needed to have everything reassembled and scope mounted.
All velocity info I can find on the ammo states 2700 +fps.
Over the radar it was 2560 and 2561 for the 2 rnds I fired.

    140fps slower than claimed.
The startup load, 3 grains under max for the powder I am using with the 180gr partitions was 2640

I know factory ammo claims are hopeful at best but 140 fps is pretty bad...even on a cold clean barrel.

If you believe the terminal ballistics website the Remington 270 ammo is meant to be just like that

beat me to it cs.....the remcoreloct has been known to be piss weak before..PARTITIONS!!!!!!!!!MAN after my own heart...that will be awesome load and nothing on Gods green earth is going to walk away from a chest shot of that medicine....if you want cheap alternative shorter range loading, the hornady 180roundnose have served me well in .308....

That Remcorlokt load has legendary status with southern Sambar hunters here and the projectiles have good terminal performance.

When loading the RP cases I have found they weigh 5-8 grains heavier than WW brass and hit pressure a couple grains sooner / lower.

Normal 180 gn load in we brass is 57 of 2209 for 2700 fps.

In my 06, max is 55 of 09 in RP brass.

Thanks for the heads up on the rem brass as that is what I have to work with. Not a fan of it, but not my rifle or choice.

Have 2209 to try but I have been given several other powders to try first.
RL 26 would likely go great with the 180s. But wasn't given any and I only have 5.5 lbs left

Yeah, Rem ammo is pretty anemic generally.

I've got a nice load in my 06 with 178ELDX and 2209, from memory its about 56.5-57gr and about 2750 fps

Under rated calibre with modern powders and high BC projectiles IMO

I havent fired much factory ammo in the last 35yrs apart from 22 and some pistol, especially over a good chrony/radar.

Always knew factory ammo velocity is rarely as stated but had no idea it could be so off the mark especially in a 24" barrel.
Get heaps of people that come into shop and complain their favorite ammo is out of stock etc. (That isint going to improve anytime soon)
My favorite is how they say the velocities are way more than the manufacturer claims.

Going to get harder to bite my tongue in order to sell them some other brand

I’ve found RP .30-06 brass quite uniform in wt. mine is fairly old though.

Contrary to what your thinking I’ve not had much success with powders slower than 09 in this cartridge and slower powders don’t seem to produce great velocity gains over 09. Hence start with 09 I reckon. I’d to a 1 grain ladder from 54 to 57 and go from there. The 178s go well in my old 700 also.

Std hornady fls die works fine with RP .30-06 brass for me.

I use rp in the .222 and Lyman or RCBS dies. No issues encountered.

The 06 is notoriously under loaded in the factory ammo due to so many old / surplus rifles in the US. I used my Rem Mountain rifle for years in Africa & Australia & shot a lot of Buffalo while living in Arnhem Land & Sambar over hounds in Oz & plains game in Africa for the camp kitchens, running our standard load using 180gn Nosler Partitions & 60gn of Re-22, clocking 2880fps in its 22"barrel.

I settled on this combo because it meant a KISS straight shoulder hold for all practical hunting of those critters Sighted-in 3" high at 100yd & 2"Low at 300,lwas put on to it by some of the most famous Hound Crews using it in the old Remington Pump actionw with barrels docked to 18",it had proven itself for years on big Sambar in the thick stuff.

Just finished loading a wee ladder up to 60.5gr RL22 starting at 55gr. Noting the Rem brass may achieve my goal earlier but pretty hard to get into trouble with RL22 in an 06 case.
I managed to get 60.5 in without hearing any powder crush so hopefully shoot it tomorrow.

Cheers for the load info. Hope it goes well in this rifle.
This guy is doing his second trip to Africa when he can travel and taking this rifle.
