Well bugger me I bought a 30.06 that's been sitting on the second hand rack for some time, well over a year.
Everyone told me the 30 06 wasn't a patch on the 308 for accuracy.
Damn , somebody should have told this rifle.

nothing wrong with 30-06....if i recall right the germans were shocked in ww1 when the yanks arrived with them....very accurate at long range.

From what I can gather Cam, the 06 is a bit under rated here,.

Absolutely, necked down by .02 inches and everyone can't say enough good things about it, but the poor old 30-06 doesn't seem to get much love!

I think it is one of the great cartridges, was my first choice but a 7mmRM popped up at a great price.

I personally like the .30-06 for no really quantifiable reason.

That's only because they were used to the yanks using the crappy French things that jambed when they looked at mud.

I was always under the impression that NZ favoured the .303 with the cheap ex-army SMLE's and the US favoured the 30-06 for similar reasons?

There certainly is a case for that. Target shooters used smle and no4s so thats 303 then moved to 308. 303 mil surp was dirt cheap, barrels apparently $5 for 10 lots sold in NZ ex-army. Lots of enfields converted to sporting, mostly ruined the accuracy in the process mind you. I must admit I love my n04 its very handy to say the least, a great battle rifle certianly it leaves the nagant for dead. The 30-06 still seems to be a big seller in the US but 308 seems popular, again cheap, as is the russian mil surp, 54R....I get the distinct impression dirt cheap counts for a lot.

I would probably use 208 A max if I had one, and spit the dummy if it didn't like them.
