Thread: Fire cracking, barrel erosion

Afternoon everyone.
Looking for some advice or predictions on the fire cracking on my sendero 7mmRM barrel.
I realise this is normal and it still shoots very well, just wondering if anyone has tracked wear or seen barrels like this. How many round do you think it has left?

Top two are further away from the throat.. The one with fire cracked land is about 50mm from the start of the lands

Borescopes have ruined more barrels than everything else put together. No go look. When accuracy drops away then you get a new barrel not before.

So true.. And that's the plan. Just wondering if anyone has monitored erosion until accuracy goes before.

I think Bore scopes have their place. I agree one can get over concerned at what you see compared to accuracy. In saying that I use mine when I buy a rifle ( can see damage, rust, copper fouling, throat erosion etc). It’s also very useful to check things like scope base screw protrusion in to the chamber.

Bore scopes are handy if you are actually making barrels. As a gunsmith with more than 50 years experience I have never found the need for one, and regular firearms owners have even less need. The proof of a barrel is the performance, nothing else. All common barrel problems can easily be detected with the naked (albeit knowledgeable) eye. Using a bore scope is bit like analysing the contents of a sausage when it already tastes good! The cost of a borescope would get better results when spent on ammo!

The greatest utility from having a borescope is being able to see how effective your cleaning regimen is. There are a large number of stainless barrels ruined by pitting from patches of carbon that create a great environment for corrosion. Ignorance is not necessarily bliss.

Read some of nathans stuff on barrel maintenance and polishing mate. Or get a new barrel and we can maje a practical for ya.��
