First reloads and zero!

Did my first reloads today as hillclimber sent me some 95gr targex to try out im going to get addicted to this reloading caper!.Any way as per 7mmsum’s recipe 95gr targex 35gr 2208 and I used federal primers(which could have been a mistake) I also loaded some of my mates 100gr sierra spizter pills aswell we put 34gr of 2208 in but were not sure on that amount which someone on here will put us straight,I also set my pills as far forward as the chamber allowed.So down to the hundy yard range for the test! Steady crosswind and warm 19deg.Put in the targex first first round pulled the trigger click!.....what the fuck,I waited then pulled the round out expecting to see no primer but there was and it was well struck.after a small hui with my mate I carried on put in a sighter no probs then shot a reasonable 3 shot group and then switched to the sierra’s.I pit in 2 reasonble shots then click! Fuck sake same prob again I then put in a fourth round but it went well out prob a little flusterd.
So whats the verdict on fed primers?
And what grn of powder would you put in for the sierra rounds?
Cheers boys and girls it was pretty satisfying to reload and shoot the rounds today cant wait to do some more.

Were all your primers fully seated? below flush with case head.

Can you pull your projectiles out and get the powder and shit back?

They did have powder in them right? I bought some dies powder and some loaded rounds from a garage sale. I pulled all the rounds and two of about 25 had no powder in them:D

The primer should of still made a bang though wouldn't it?

I will check em in the week re powder im laughing becuase more than likely thats the prob ha ha fuck ill laugh if thats the reason.

im sure primers make a bang so even if you had no powder it should of made a small bang, I maybe wrong though.

that wont be the problem haha, the primer would have sent the pill on its way im thinking, probably would have ended up stuck half way down your barrel.... Never used federal primers so cant comment but possibly they could have got wet, or they were just a dud batch

Iv never tried it "primed no powder" for fear of possibly lodging a bullet in the barrel but id say more likely it would just go click.

Fed primers are good.
I did have a powderless round chambered and fired once in a 6BR. Nothing budged so it is possible.

The little "feet" on the primer need to be pushed up in the primer when seated to "arm" them. this pushes the anvil up to the primer compound.

The primers were all set flush and yeah we thought it would ther would have been a strike even without powder?

I would just about bet my bottom dollar it would get stuck in the barrel, there would be a bang, no recoil whatsover, the danger comes when you dont pay attention, pump another round behind the stuck bullet and then you go BOOOOM... not good.

ill use the mates round puller in the week and put the issue to bed hopefully.

If I wasnt in the middle of the burbs Id go and try it right now just to see what happened.
A primed case fired no projectile is pretty quiet, doubt it would move the pill but havent actually tested it.

It wouldnt have enough pressure to push into the lands or maybe just enough to engage and leave the pill in there when you eject the brass

+1 it will not lodge in the barrel.

Did you get your hands oily when resizing and not wipe them before handling the primers, Jas?
How new, are the primers?
Are the cases once fired in your rifle?

would put money on it that the powder has sizing lube on it, i do it every now and again from gettting too excited when im loading :thumbsup:
or not paying attention after 100 or so case preps
only takes a tiny drop but when you pull the pill the powder will be all stuck together

Once fired,new primers ,I was using vaseline while poping the old primers out but wiped my hands of after doing that while cleaning out the area where the primers live?.

Nope - in a pistol you will stick a bullet just into the rifling due to small case space (never had it happen in 9mm but had 2 in 45) , but in a rifle never had it happen and doubt you could generate enough pressure to even move a 55gr in 223 due to volume of case

Was loading 1000rds of 223 on the Dillon and ran out of powder about 20rds before the end. Ph rang, came back and continued to knock the last 20 out on the ph, and dump them into the ammo tin.. THEN I clicked - started weighting them 1 by 1 and gave up.
Found them next time at the range - good for practising stoppages with the AR :)

BTW, can you confirm no tumbler media in the flash hole?
I used to size and deprime and then tumbler to get lube off, then load. Required a universal decapper in station 1 of the press to ensure the primer pocket was free of media - as more often than not it was plugged.
Have flagged it now and just tumble with dead primers in - too much extra wk when you're dealing with 1000s of cases

Didn't use CRC or similar to lube the cases? Get any solvents near the primers at all?

In my own experience (and I have had the no powder woops much as I don't like to admit it) depending upon neck tension, the projectile will range from no movement to just engaging the rifling in which case a gentle tap with a rod will dislodge it. Sound like maybe primers not seated correctly but if that was the case and they were proud you probably would have felt a wee bit of resistance closing the bolt. Oil contamination - some manufacturers claim their primers are impervious as they are sealed with a lacquer. I have certainly used oil to kill primers but have also had them still give a pop 24 hours later when fired. Whether strong enough to ignite a powder charge...?? I have experienced one misfire ever and that was with a CCI BR primer behind win 760 powder which is a little hard to light up at any rate. Pulled the cartridge apart and the powder in the bottom had turned slightly yellow and melted so some sort of flame had got to it. Just put it down to a bad primer. (No, my loads are not awash with lube!)

Nah mate I used vaseline for re-sizing the necks but no solvents they were put from the box of primers to a empty projectile case as far as i can recall they wernt near anything and I cleaned my hands before i placed the primers into the flash hole.Im pullin the projectils out when i have the time this week to see what happnd.

What sort of dies are you using Jas? Can you remove the sizing collar off the stem but retain the de capping pin? If so get some cases, decapp them and fit new primers with no lube anywhere. Fire them off and if they all go, you can start to look at say a lube/primer issue. If not you may have a bad batch or a sizing issue.
Just got to narrow it down bit by bit as it is hard without seeing things first hand.

meths cleaning cases will destroy the primer if assembled before all the vapor has vented :P

MMMM didnt know that i always let them dry and blow them out but ,,,,,,,will stop cleaning them with meths ,,,,

Whether or not the projectile moves is down to neck tension - my exact experience. But it certainly will never stick in the barrel. I would pull the projectiles and powder on the misfires and with a wee torch you can easily can see if the primer has gone pop or not - you can see the bright red die of the unfired primer/or not if fired. Primers are bit more grunty than we think - a guy in my rifle club seated a primer upside down and worst still attempted to fire that round. Result, it partially blew the extractor claw off. Powder never ignited. Initially he was unable to open the bolt. Also aware of another with a new 308 case without a flash hole which when fired actually had enough force to compress the case a bit into the chamber. The guy carried that case around for years and bored any new shooters with the story.
Spanners is right I think with his statement about the volume of the case determining what happens.

yep ok I see what your saying ill elliminate the main issue of looking at the primer first and work backwards on it.
