so I was watching a short video about different chamberings using the .277 projectiles and the fury got my attention.
from what was said its a std .308 case with steel head,which allows 80,000 psi Vs normal 50-60
is this correct???? and IF INDEED it is a std .308 case size...why hasnt it been necked back up to .30 calibre??? or down to .260 or .243
one would have to imagine a 6mm projectile with 80k up its arse would be fair honking along.

The calibre itself does not intrigue me so much as the tech to make the case itself...I mean a 30call necked down to .277 is effectively a 7mm08 so they have made a 7mm08 capable of being sold in a imperial society and with a really strong case. That same tech applied to the calibres you mentioned including 308 or a magnum calibre really could be interesting....Especially if you have some sort of recoil fetish....
the posibilities are endless IF steel case head can handle the pressure...SURELY an entire steel case with beefed up dimentions EG thicker sidewalls and base will have said same pressure coping abilities....
so,something like 22-250 powder capacity internally.....
you could go oldschool and lengthen case to increase capacity..... so a high pressure .45/70 in a case with say .45/90 external dimentions but same capcity internally as shorter round.
it almost would make the likes of WSM redundant if you beefed up the case walls and base and were able to up the pressure with less powder of diferent sort....
or could even make them MORE attractive with beefed up ammunition....like the plus P loads in handgun but oh so much more so.
I think it's because of the yanks MGSW project. Sig knew the US military wanted to go 6.8mm.

There was a short piece in either Handloader or Rifle on the .277 Fury or 6.8 x 51 a little while back which I can't find at the moment. It has a composite case and runs at high pressure. Case head and length are the same as the 7.62 x 51. Supposedly developed to improve performance over that of the 5.56. Apparently the 5.56 was found lacking at long range against an adversary wearing thick woollen clothing. Fancy that. Now that the US is exiting the country where the locals wear thick woollen clothing in the winter who knows what will happen next. The wisdom of having a very high pressure cartridge operating in countries that are made mostly of dust and grit does escape me though. Produces .270 Win performance in a smaller case.

It's more to do with the increasing prevalence of body armour in the Russian and Chinese militaries than it is to do with 5.56's relatively poor performance at extended range vs unarmoured targets.
