good projectiles for longer ranges?

Hi there I was looking for some opinions from experience about good projectiles or better projectiles for shooting deer at ranges out to 400-500yds
currently Im running a .260Rem with "140gr Sierra Spitzer Gameking Boat tail" I like this round at shorter ranges but am hesitant to push it out too far, I've trialed the A-Max 140gr but that was too long for my mag
I was thinking of trying out some Barnes TTSX 120gr Boat tails (they fit in my mag) and some Hornady 123gr SST's any thoughts?

longer bolt stop and long action mag, then use the 140 amaxes you got should be heaps for 500 plus

Its a remington 700, built in mag I've thought of trying the 120gr Amax to see if the measurement from O-give to tip is less than the 140gr Amax or that seated deeper it just shoots better than the 140's did

ah ok have you tried seating the 140 amax to mag length to see how it goes, you should still get about 2600-2700fps

Definitely not barnes ttsx, yes they will open but will not be going fast enough to deliver shock or create a decent wound channel +400y ...same could probably be said for all the other monolithic projectiles.

Nice frangible projectiles with a decent bc include amax,sst,nosler ballistic tip,berger,targex(unsure if he does a 6.5?)

Yea I seated the 140 Amax deeper But it started throwing the group out I was getting almost 2700fps

He doesn't do 6.5 but last time I talked to him he said he was "thinking about it"

Targex are the bomb ... Super accurate and super killers.

I have never owned one so take my advice with a grain of salt..... I would think 120-140gr heavier is generally better as you push out in range for both energy and wind age tho this often only becomes noticeable +600

Nothing wrong with the standard 140gn SSTs in a 6.5/.260

I load them in my mates 6.5x55 Swe

Bergers? The LR Barnes? What ever you go for, make sure you chose accuracy over terminal performance.

I've shot one deer at 400 yards with my .308 and the Barnes projectiles, supprisingly there was a lot of impact damage. I've shot quite a few deer with that projectile and none of them have dropped on the spot. I'm still a little bit suspicious about that projectiles performance, that's why I suggested the LR TTSX.

I would suggest the swift 130gr because it kills up close and way out there. I have used them in 6.5-06 and .260 improved but at a little higher MV than a standard .260.
I have shot the 129 gr interlock accurately to 600 and it is also a great killing bullet in my experience.
I don't see any sense in a load that will not perform at all ranges. Stay away from SST and Amax if you are looking for an all rounder. But in saying that, they may be fine at a slower starting MV.

What grain weight? Interesting. They are a good projectile indeed.
Definitely lighter and faster is better for the Barnes I've used and am using.
All deer I've shot with the TSX and ttsx have moved 1-15metres. No dramas at all and all well dead. But I wouldn't use the Barnes for extended ranges where velocity is falling away. Even if they were accurate as.
I haven't used them in the 6.5 neither so half a teaspoon of salt with my response please...

I've just started playing with berger 130gr VLD'S in my 260 rem. Decent bc, frangible enough to expand at lower impact velocity. Got them doing 2900 from my 20" mod 7 barrel. Run the ballistics on thoses numbers, surprisingly impressive.

Cheers... I've ordered a sample pack of the swifts 130gr, and some nosler BT 140gr and I'm going to trial some of my mates SST's and just see how they all go, I'm hoping my rifle likes the swifts as I also read they are a great all round projectile.
I'm going to stick with 130gr-140gr

yea thats quick... I also have a 20" barrel and it likes the higher velocities, ive been running 140gr so far so im around 1770fps, I use to use berger VLD's in my .243 found them very accurate.

The swifts look hard? Do they expand much moving slower?

The 123 sst's shoot well out of my 6.5x55. Built for grendel speeds so reasonably frangible and have a decent BC (.51) should be able to hit 2900-3000.

I shot a red at 500yrds with my 308 sst projectiles and dropped it like a stone. couldn't find the projectile but found three good size exit wounds. don't like making long shots but some times u just have to.

Long shots if they work out can mean a long carry if they don't wounded animal.... or at best a miss and scare everything that was closer that you hadn't seen.

Can also mean meat on the deck before it is too dark to shoot:)
