You are best to start with the right gun from the start I think.
The old BSA hunter in 222 could be a good candidate as well. I have converted one from 22 hornet to 7,62x39 and the feeding from the mag was really the difficult part.
Apparently the new mini howa is going to come with 7.62x39 barrels , that would be another candidate.

Mine was a 7.62x39 CZ 527 its now a 14.5" Barrel 6.5 Grendel, 123r Amax at 2475 and been out this morning shooting at steel 600m no problems. shot a few Sika (12+) with it now and one big Red Stag ranges from 12m - 320m wouldn't have taken ten steps between them after the bullet hit. There a photo in another thread somewhere?
