H1000 and AR2217 History

I was fossiking through some old Handloader mags this morning and stumbled on a Propellent Profiles column by San Fadala on H1000. H1000 was developed by ICL Nobels Powder co at Hodgdons request. Originally called Experimental 1968 it was named H1000 for its presumed association with 1,000 yard bench rest shooting. Sam had a batch of Experimental 1968 to test in 1987 and his column on H1000 appeared in Handloader 141 September October 1989. Load data developed by Hodgdon for mostly heavy projectiles in cartridges from the .22-250 to the .308 Norma Magnum was included. For most cartridges tha data was within a grain or two of todays loads but for the .243 and 7mm Rem Mag some start loads equalled or exceeded todays max loads. Loads for these two cartridges were reduced after the use of the more sensitive electronic pressure measurenent systems showed high or variations in pressure..
At some stage ADI got involved and a short cut version aka AR2217 was introduced. My can of AR2217 was packed in 1999 and I measured the length of a powder grain at 1.25mm v the 2.0mm length of the original H1000 quoted by Sam.

Have a look at ADI 2208

Was developed for, and most accurate at, 600yrd competition shooting

ADI 2217 is probably the best powder on the planet for maintaining velocity during large changes in temperature

2208 beats it but only just at 0.19 fps/degree.
2217 comes in at 0.21 fps/degree.
A close race methinks.

Hey grandpa Mac have the Adi powders changed significantly over the years?

I have a tin of 2213sc packed in 1993. Looks and smells fine but I wonder how it compares with todays load data

With one exception I have not noted any significant changes. The exception was AR2209 which was sped up about 2000 for some reason. I did some coparitive tests recently with three lots fron 1991,2000 and about 2018. The last lot gave about 80 fps more velocity with the 129 grain SST with everything else the same. This startleed me a bit and I now chronograph each new lot of powder with a standard charge and have found no differences. Some lots of projectiles differ more.
As far as keeping as long as the powder has not been subjected to too much heat it should be fine. I am still using IMR 4064 packed in the late 1970's and in the 1980's I used powder stripped from 1942 .30-06 ammo in my .308. The AR2201 powder that was used by CAC prior to 1980 had a poor life in the heat and has caked and killed the primer in some .303 I have broken dow for the components.
