Thread: Hammer Hunter .270 performance

I'm very impressed by the performance of the 117 grain Hammer Hunter bullet out of my 22" .270wsm. Velocity is 3,450 fps using R19.
Here are some pics of the terminal performance from Saturday.

Fallow buck at 240 yards. Angled lung shout. Good splattering of blood on the ground, and dead on the spot. Both pics are the exit.





This one (Fallow spiker) was running up hill away from me and I hit it in the spine between the hips (not a very good shot). I found the shank and a couple petals in the front of a shoulder. This is how they are meant to perform with the petals breaking off and the shank driving through. The petals in them selves cause some serious damage.



Over all Im very impressed with them and also use 124 grn in a 6.5prc and have fiddled a bit with 60 grn in .223.
The are very expensive with the cost of freight from the States spoiling it really.

3400 for him with that case...SHOULD get 3100-3200fps from std .270w these LOOK to preform much better than the similar barnes along similar weights.

In November hunting with my mate up the coast. He destroyed a big stag in the front shoulder with a 55gr Barnes at 200m. It took 3 of us to lift that animal. The TSX is an amazing pill. No wonder he screams if I ever suggest another projectile.

Yeah - I was thinking that - I made a .303 bullet out of silver when I was in my teens and swapped it with a loaded bullet in a case - and that hit what I was aiming at.

For vampires you might be better off with garlic bullets

That 'silver' bullet (was .303) was a 'thought' that happened - not very bright .............

But ........... if you approach the idea of making bullets, it's not an impossible thing. People were 'clothing' lead slugs with used .22ir cases years ago to shoot out of their .222's and so on.
Those 'Hammer Hunter's' are a blend of copper, so you cut a blank from a piece of solid rod and squeeze it to shape - just like the company Ajax GKN did half a life time with mild and high tensile steel bolts. Might need to do it in stages .... probably .......
You'll need a stamping machine, or you could go slower with hydraulic presses - the dies will be the thing and I'd probably go carbide for durability - and then you heat treat the buggers.

Bit of thought there and money required - but it ain't impossible ...........

I have tried the garlic bullets. Taints their meat.

the .22lr cased bullets are still around.....
