Thread: HELP! Powder coat not sticking

Hi all, I need some with powder coating. I acquired some powder coat powder today for free, so tonight I decided to give powder coating a crack. Well, I couldn't get the powder to stick to the bullets. Tried preheating the bullets for 30secs, no luck. Tried 1min, still no luck. tried 1.5mins, started to stick but thick and blotchy. tried 2mins, stuck all over but way to think. Whats the trick to get powder to stick, cover evenly and not too thick? I baked a few to see how they would turn out but terrible. One that got a even but thick coating look ok but where the gas check sits on was full of powder and there'd be no chance of getting a GC on.

i am still learning, but i powder coat 85 gr 25-20 bullets, in a toaster oven at 300-350 f, for 10-12 minutes, at 15 minutes they deform (sigh)

A friend go mine powder coats his bullets, don't know what system he uses but he washes the bullets in Acetone before coating them.

must be very very clean, use acetone and then don't touch them. Heaps of videos on YouTube.

From what I know there are 2 types of powder coat. One requires an electron charge to stick. The other is a thermoset that will melt and stick on with heat.

@Joe_90 I've seen that video, I tried the pre heat trick but turned shit on me. Not sure how I'll achieve the electro charge trick?

I think that would require a positive charge powder gun with a negative charge on the work piece. Or vice versa.

The powder coat stuff I've got is designed to bake on. It's just scraps out of the bottom of the booth.

I've never had this problem with beeswax lube just saying (-:

@Marty Henry . What's you recipe for using beeswax? Pan or tumble lube? I've heard of people tumble lubing with beeswax but can't find any info on how its done.

Are you using TGIC powder?

Pan lube, stand a whole bunch up, pour melted wax to the top of the grease grooves let it cool then cut them out with a case with the base cut off.

@Marty Henry. I'm casting micro groove bullets so not sure if pan lubing will lube efficiently?
