    Hornady Lock-N-Load Auto

hey all, im looking at purchasing one of these.
Would this be good for a beginner? Less parts to lose etc.
I already have dies for 7mm rem mag, and 300 winman, and shell holder.

If I broght this ( Besides consumabes ) what else would I need to purchase to get into reloading ?

Also , is there another option you recommend?

    thanks

    Among other things:

Calipers to measure things like case length and overall length

Lube to apply to cases to stop them sticking in the die,

Case gauge to check that the case is sized correctly ( this is optional but very handy)

A book to record what you did for each load so you can keep track of details.

Reloading reference books. Have a look for ADI's latest manual, or download it online.

The press you linked to looks like it will take a bit to get your head around seeing you're a beginner. but if you have a head for technical stuff, why not.

I've got one. Good for loading 1000 round lots of pistol ammo but takes a lot of setting up when you change calibers.
Better with an ordinary press for hunting ammo. You will need scales too.

Like Brian said unless you are loading hundreds at a time better off with a single stage press. Way easier to learn on and less chance of stuff ups. They can be a bit finicky to set up. Ive got both and now with no semis, probably load mostly on the single stage as I like to weigh my powder charges as mostly shoot longer range now.

Ok, thanks guys. Is there a decent single stage setup I should be looking at?

I'll throw this in the ring and see who agrees:

    RCBS Rockchucker
    Brian and WillB like this.

I've been using a Hornady Classic for nearly 25 years without any problems. I got sold on the quick change bushings. In reality I still like it but it doesn't really offer that much more (if anything) over a normal style "O" frame press like the Rockchucker.

I've had Dillon and Hornady Lock n' Load Progressive, and if you are pistol shooting, either in good. My prefference in the Lock n' load over the Dillon XL650 due to the priming system and easier change overs.

I ran rifle load though it too for the 260. It way really good for for the powders that meter well, but the larger (slow burning) powders are not super flash in any thrower.

If you are only going to load rifle, for bolt actions etc, a Single Stage is more than enough for most. I run a Lee single single and shot 2000m with the 338 and 1600m with the 6mm. But if I brought another press, it would likely be a Foster Co-Axle or RCBS rock chucker (cheaper).

Dillon 550 is a good compromise between a single stage and progressive.
You have to index the shell plate manually so you have more control if things are not right.
I load precision rifle ammo on mine using it like a single stage. No issues.

Just get the cheap lee set up works fine. The scales are a bit annoying but accurate as.just buy some case lube because apparently the stuff it comes with is crap(i never gave it a go).
And then some consumables brass, powder, primers and projectiles and your all up and running probably get it all under 500.

RCBS, Redding, Lyman, Hornady, Forster - all very good single stage presses
