Hornady SST

So Ive been using Federal blue box in my 16inch 308. Shoots pretty good. I have been faced with a few longer shots recently which I havent taken. I have 2 boxes of Hornady superperformance SST . The box says “ interlock” bullet.
They are 1/2 inch group at 100. Ive been reluctant to use them at the closer distance I tend to shoot at deer .(bush etc)
Question is being “ interlock” should the Hornady be ok at 50 and function and not “ blow up” as Ive read ( or is that in the past)
and allow me to take the longer shot as theyre ballistically better.
Are there different types of bullets in the hornady super performance SST range.

Id say it'll be sweet as it wont be going at light speed out of a 16'' barrel, their all I used for years but the 180gn variant . And the interlock it a hell of a bullet so so SST must be a tipped interlock huh

Funny thing though is that while some people really like 130gr SSTs in 270s, I know one guy that has enough of them to think the opposite. I get the impression that 130ssts in a 270 are quite a bit more explodey than an interlock

I was thinking same thing when read the above,then read velocity.....and that would make HUGE difference... the 120grn sst if able to find them as a component would make a very good reduced load in .270w soft enough to expand at slower speed...it would also make awesome red mist of wallabies at full noise LOL.... you just have to see terminal damage from a 100-110 grn varmit projectile to appreciate the mess they make... a 1.5coke bottle size n shaped path of jelly inside animal,strike like lightening bolt..but dont for goodness sake try shoulder shooting something big with them.

The opposite if using a normal 30 cal projectile in a big magnum and expecting it to hold together. @Tentman has written in a post only today of the exact same thing in a 6.8spc
Also found in reading up on 8x57 projectiles that the 170sst is a very good thing while the normally almost explodey ballistic tips are not in the 8mm jobbie. Very thick jacket.
Apparently they get tougher the bigger the calibre.
Also while I havent tried them the 150gr 270 sets and meant to be very good

There used to be interbond sst as a factory load option. In between interlock and the gmx projectile. No longer sold as a factory load with superformance but you can still buy interbond projectiles I think?

I suppose theres one way to find out Ned. It wouldn’t be a problem “ testing “ if shots at deer were frequent but unfortunately for me they’re not . :D

Yes the tip will make them more explosive than it’s lead nose alternative the difference between the ops application and a 130 gn in a .270 is the .270 is sending a 130gn at light speed

They haven't let me down yet.

No. The SST is a plastic tip over a hollow point and a thin jacket, a proper Interlock is a cup and core lead filled job, much less "explody" I used a lot of 165 SST in a 16" barreled .308 on Tahr, and they worked just fine out to 300yd, pass through and lots of terminal damage, wouldn't go near a light for cartridge SST.

As per last post once I couldn't get 150 interbonds I went to 165 interlocks. Still have some soft nose for bush stalking. I just have a 150 soft nose as the first cartridge when bush stalking with the hotter superformance factory 165 SSTs underneath in case I find something open/longer range. Easy to cycle the soft nose out.

The superformance 150gr sst goes extremely well in a 16inch 308 at all ranges from my experience.
It’s only when pushing it at high speeds when you sometimes have issues close up.

The sst work great at close range from the 08 case.
Have used them in my 18inch 7mm08 in the past.
Bullet construction is very similar to eld-x with jacket thickness and interlock ring, just the sst has a lower bc and a cannlure

funny as hell,I thought I was replying to that thread,thus comment on reduced speed......
interloct is good bullet,boring as hell...the shoot tiny groups and kill stuff dead...dead boring.
