    Stupid question probably but could that cupping stand be causing some resistance?

    Could you set it up to have a free whoosh out the bottom like after a good curry by sitting it on an uneven surface?

    If not that, could the fit up of the piston and cylinder be too tight causing surface friction drag on the walls of the chambers to dissipate the hammer blow?

    As VC says, a larger hammer is required. I use a finishing hammer, generally speaking
