I have a cunning plan

or maybe not.

A mate has been asked to deal to some problem pigs raiding a local orchard. Three of us popped up after dark last night, and sure enough, the culprits were getting stuck into the apples etc. Unfortunately, after one shot from suppressed AR15, which secured a small weiner, the rest dispersed into the thick stuff double quick. There are some decent sized pigs in this mob too apparently, but due to space issues, and nearby properties, we cant get too carried away with the shooting.
Plan B is to load up some subs for my 308 and see how that goes, used in conjunction with NV.

Rifle is Rem mod 7 with 16 1/2 inch barrel, plus DPT can.
I have some Trail boss powder and, thanks to our man in Tokoroa, some nice cast 151 gn projectiles. I don't have a chrono, but can possibly borrow one if I need to.
From what I have read, the idea is to start slightly high with the powder, and test fire without suppressor to make sure rounds A; leave the barrel B; don't tumble.

What charge should I be starting with etc etc please?

Sub loads in my 308 18" barrel is 8.3 grains trail boss. 151 grain projectiles sourced from the same supplier in tokoroa. [emoji106][emoji106]

7.7 grain into the exact same barrel but 17" long. It seems that the longer the barrel, the more powder you need to overcome the friction.( not mentioning all kind of bore dimensions going from 0.2984 up to 0.3020" in the gun industry...)

Probably only a minor consideration, but does a stainless barrel V blued make enough difference to be, well, a difference.

As above the rule with trail boss is start with a full case and work down.....Ie the opposite of normal rifle reloading.

My chrony is always here if you want it but subs is easy, work down till it goes quiet in full grains, load more in .2-.5gr around the point they went quiet and preferably select the highest charge that no shots crack and accuracy is acceptable.

I cant afford thermal mate. Will stick with my wee Yukon digi NV for now. All good at close quarters.

Not always a good idea to start at a full case. We were sub loading a 7.62x39 and discovered that if a cast projectile exceeds 1400fps without a gas check, it turns to very small molten lead droplets and turned a rifle into a 30 bore smooth bore. It took ages to clean the lead out of the rifling to the extent we almost rebarreled....That was about 11gr trail boss. It seems about 8gr is pretty good. but we also used a 180gr too. (And we gas check now as well...)

Casts are gas checked and lubed I believe .

Is there any way you can funnel feed into an effective killing box?
So you can get more than one shot at em. Failing that build a high seat at lest then all shots should be angled into the ground!
Subs sound good to but once the first one goes off they will all start running.
Maze should do it, you won't need much.
If you need to build the high seat then I'd put the maze down as you build so that there not put out as the construction takes place.
Finish well before dark and feed, once built I'd then feed heavy for two nights and hit em on the third:thumbsup:

Id add that go on a real windy night . Even with subs I'm guessing they will spook , you may just get away with it if wind is up . We spotlit heaps of pigs over green feed , good old Norwester was our friend .

Another option rather than clean them out all in one go and freeze the whole is take 1 or 2 at a time then you have fresh meat on tap

Definitely don't start with a full case of Trail Boss you will get a shotgun pattern most loads that are shooting well are between 8.0 and 9.0 grains with no fillers or drilled out flash-holes
and standard primers, If you haven't shot cast bullets through your barrel before give it a serious clean lead just hates copper, use your can to develop your load the gas checks won't come
off try getting one off a bullet I'll send a replacement, they will stabilise just fine I shoot them through a 1:13" twist barrel,

So I loaded some up thi morning, starting at 10 gr and going down t 8.3 gr.

Tested x3 of each. One shot with no suppressor. One shot with suppressor once I knew they didn't tumble. Then one shot with suppressor into pine blocks to test expansion.
8.4 seems best at the moment, although I am not certain they are quite subsonic as my hearing is crap anyway. Will test over chrono.
Penetration and expansion are good at 50 yards. Passed through two 30mm blocks of dry pine with ease, and retained a high % of projectile weight, while expanding very well.

8.3 gr lacked penetration and was borderline tumbler.
Love the lack of recoil :thumbsup:

Not always but its a good idea. It depends on who casts them and what they cast them for....Dont need a gas check on a 12g cast slug....

I doubt you are getting any tumbling I've run the Berger stability calculator on it and at 600fps it has a stability factor of 2.47 any thing greater than 1.5 is stable, at 1050fps it is 2.98.

8.5 grains trailboss gives me 970 fps and 2 inch groups at 50 metres with 151 grain cast lead hp. My 14 year old daughter is going to use this for hunting as it has very little recoil

You should up the load a bit mine does 1040fps and groups 1/2" at 50 metres and 1.4" at 100 metres a little more speed may tighten your group

It may well have been a slight optical illusion caused by the angle of entry, as the shot was slightly down hill.

What sort of accuracy are you getting? My two .308's both shoot 5 shot groups of 1/2" at 50 metres you should be getting 1" groups at that distance at least

Pengy bring your stability calculator to the Toby shoot this year. I would like you to calculate Gibo after a night on the piss. There is no way he will be subsonic though.

I haven't been trying to shoot for accurate grouping yet, and to be honest, I am not that fussed so long as it hits within an inch of where I aim it at 50 yards. I don't intend it for anything outside of that on animals..
So far, my test loads have been remarkably spot on, even with me on the trigger
