Finally got to the range today seating depth ladder results are in and I have settled on a load.
As per above 6 rounds at each depth, 10thou, 50thou, 90thou and 130thou from my jam/lands.
All of todays rounds were shot without a magnetospeed clamped to the barrel to ensure no external effects on grouping.
I shot 2 fouling rounds into the dirt, then started on my groups 3 shot group, cool barrel for 5 minutes then shoot second 3 shot group at the same target, allow 10 minutes for barrel to cool before moving on to the next seating depth, rinse and repeat.
My original charge weight rounds were 10thou and the 10thou rounds I shot today shot a similar group.
Attachment 228513
At 50 thou the groups tightened up, I'm also fairly confident I pulled the single to the left but even if I didn't that's pretty good and is where my final load is.
Attachment 228514
At 90thou the group opened up with a lot of vertical spread, nothing good here.
Attachment 228515
At 130thou the first shot was quite a bit lower and right of the rest of the 5 rounds so again nothing noteworthy here.
Attachment 228516
So I will settle on 50thou off the lands, will load up 50, use 3 to zero and then run a few with the magnetospeed to confirm velocity.
Looks like she's good to go velocity should be high 2700fps to low 2800fps with the increase in pressure created by seating the projectiles 40thou deeper than my charge ladder.
Well done. Very satisfactory result.
Good stuff. Nearly ready to sell then.
he beat me to it LOL..... now WHEN featherweight comes up for sale...well it will be a mad rush to get in first...
heard it all before .....LMFAO
@dannyb
What cal for the Win Featherweight ?
You reckon you should have had it bedded before starting load development?
It's gonna get bedded anyway, can't see it getting worse. Will be bedded around the recoil lug, tang and also adding pillars. It is already fully free floated.
To put in perspective the seating depth I settled on the group pictured was 2 x 3 shot groups shot 5 minutes apart. Individually both those 3 shot groups were easily sub moa. It's more than good enough even if bedding doesn't improve grouping.

Frustrating day at the range today, adjusted the scope and sent 3 down range, it sprayed them all over the place I then sent another 3 down range same deal, I was getting frustrated so packed the rifle up will re visit this another day, I know to just leave it when I'm getting frustrated so that's exactly what I did.
I previously shot 6 rounds with the same load and it stacked them with good tight ES, I don't know why it's spraying them now they are loaded to the same specs.
Is it bedding, is it scope mounts moving ? Stuffed if I know. The only difference between today and the other day is that I didn't have the magnetospeed hanging off the barrel. All my previous experience tells me that normally this might show a slight POI change but I have never experienced this causing a difference in group size. Next time I go back to the range I'll chuck the magnetospeed back on just to rule that out but I'm fairly confident that isn't the issue. :pissed off:
Of course I loaded 50 rounds up thinking I was all sorted :psychotic:
This has been my experience too for the most part however i had it happen twice where i had to re visit seating depth after removing magnetospeed. Both times i found the seating depth it liked to be very close to where it was happy with magnetospeed on (within 30 thou).
You might get away with leaving your loaded rounds and just bumping a few of them down a little shorter in a ladder and see how you go.

Yup will give that a go too, just know better than to keep sending lead down range when I'm frustrated, will try magnetospeed on, then will try bumping seating depth to see if things improve if that doesn't work. Heck I could go back to the range and everything could be sweet as.....
If you see someone walking around the hills with a magnetospeed attached, say hello to Dannyb
When I had a magnetospeed I always made sure I did the attached and un attached at the same range session. Also observed some loads that grouped better with the MS attached. Stands to reason as the MS will act like a tuner and could either improve or degrade group sizes.
Progress update.....
Went to the range today to give the bear a bit of air :yaeh am not durnk:
Shot 2 rounds of my previously proven hopeless rounds and was immediately confronted by the fact they were still hopeless (was quietly hoping ladt session I was just having a bad day, I wasn't)
Seated 3 of thd loaded rounds to SAAMI COAL and shot a 3 shot group. I will point out my hand loads where seated much much longer than SAAMI so this was purely just experimental to see if seated to SAAMI length would improve things.
I only shot 1 group but it was .945" which is a damn sight better than any of the recent groups I've shot with it.
I will bump a few more back to SAAMI COAL next chance I get to go to the range and hopefully things stay consistent.
If they do I will be more than happy with that, may or may not tutu the seating depth from there but would need to go back over my notes to see what I've already tried.
Definitely feeling a little more positive about things but unsure when I'll get back to the range yet......life is mostly consumed withh all tjongs landcruiser related currently.

Stuff a wee bit of sticky under forend to about four pounds reverse pressure, trust me it works.
Im sure I read in here this rifle wouldnt be onsold LOL....
just poking the bear bud..poking the bear...
That Lupo was a beauty before it fired a shot just sayin'
MD knows I've had some issues with the recoil, having only ever shot a .22 before shooting this Finnbear. But im slowly figuring it out. Anyway, this pic is my first 5 shot group this last Saturday. Factory ammo, Hornady American Whitetail 150gr, range was 100m. I tried shifting the point of impact up 1.5", but then began flinching and shooting inconsistent 4" groups, so I gave up and will try again another day. Seems I get scared of pulling the trigger after half a dozen shots at paper.

Brad, lets go and shoot something at the NZDA range. I can load you some lighter .30/06 loads if that feels like it might be helpful, and we can work our way through the flinch thing. Some things are like learning French, get the accent right and it will be fine. (I dont really know what that means either)
I have taught a few people and some simple ideas can make a big difference in one afternoon. You can obviously already shoot.
I have to shoot my new Sako too, so we can have a Sako day.
Bit surprised it's such a beast.
It wouldn't be a lightweight I'd imagine and from the pics from the first few posts the recoil pad looks OK.
I'm not a recoil lover but neither do I want it but I do suppose I can handle it from all the heavy shotgun loads I used to use.
I did have some moments with the 8x57 couple of years back. 185gr doing up over 2600fps from packet but can't remember exactly.
Relatively light czech mauser with 23 1/2" stepped barrel and no recoil pad.
Shoulder wasn't annihilated but after a dozen or so I thought a couple of packets worth would've been interesting.
Shortened it enough to fit a good slip on pad and one of those velcro stock riser ammo holder thingies to get the eye in line with the scope.
Massive difference. Less kick and not any cheek smacking although I don't remember a sore cheek the first time.
Way more comfy second time around.
I would've thought a heavyish old school wooden Euro with 150s and a good recoil pad shouldn't be that bad but hey I'm not the one shooting it
JohnDuxbury, I will reply to your DM. Appreciate it.
Csmiffy, its not a beast. I am pretty sure a more experienced shooter would have no problem with my rifle. In fact, before I shoot too many rounds I'm fine with it too. The problem is I've been shooting nearly a whole box of ammo, and the rifle is not very heavy either. Before this 30-06 I had only ever shot a .22
Yes, it's my technique and lack of experience, not the rifle. I am 6"3 and 108kg, so maybe I'm just wimpy. That will definitely be it haha
Try some 130 or 125gr projectiles. I used 60.5gr 2209 and a magnum rifle primer wirh125ge Sierra and 130gr Speer in my 30/06. Great on goats and less recoil.
Take Mr Duxbury up on that offer and you will be sorted in no time. Sometimes another experienced set of eyes will spot something obvious that makes world of difference.you don't know what you don't know. You are not too proud to ask for help and that is a great thing.
I had the same rifle once. Shooting prone the stock used to belt my cheek bone. Sitting , standing all good.
Try softer 150 gn loads or run 130s. For a while.

When I moved up from my .22LR to my Franchi .243 I got a bit of a flinch on (after the first session of shooting it, at which I was fine, probably because I was "new rifle fever")
I was anticipating the BOOM and snatching at the trigger, with predictable results.
What worked for me was to slow myself right down and get my breathing sorted, couple of sessions like that and now I'm good and it's not been an issue since no idea if that's of any help to you but it worked for me.
Also, to the OP, whilst I know nothing about reloading, what you're explaining is fascinating
Likely nobody will be interested, but I thought I'd type out an update about what happened to this rifle.
After 2 or 3 Leith Valley range visits I couldn't make it shoot. So I asked Mr Passmore to give it a try, and he couldn't make it shoot either. Two different shooters, multiple different types of ammo, including some of Passmores hand loads. Passmore said it was a bedding issue, so I got that done. Only to find out the Leith range was shut for 2 months for winter maintenance.
Their first day open was today, and I took it along. Put a box of 150gr hornady whitetail ammo through it. The money seems well spent on the bedding job. With my amateur front-rest-only ability it was grouping within an inch or so, and consistently in the same place on the paper. Very very pleased
Absolutely stoked to read that mate.absolutely stoked. Now go shoot a deer and fill the freezer.
Yes, I will smite a deer soon. I have a plan
I sighted in the howa 223 I bought from mudgripz too. That thing is a honey to shoot
